NOTE The great Sioux massacre in Minnesota commencedA
at the Agency village on the Minnesota River early in theB
morning of the th day of August precipitatedC
doubtless by the murders at Acton on the day previous TheB
massacre and the Indian war that followed developed manyD
brave men but no truer hero than Mauley an obscureE
Frenchman the ferry man at the Agency Continually underF
fire he resolutely ran his ferry boat back and forth acrossG
the river affording the terror stricken people the onlyD
chance for escape He was shot down on his boat just as heD
had landed on the opposite shore the last of those who fledH
from the burning village to the ferry landing The IndiansI
disemboweled his dead body cut off the head hands and feetJ
and thrust them into the cavity See Heard's Hist SiouxK

Crouching in the early morningL
Came the swarth and naked Sioux CFM
On the village without warningL
Fell the sudden savage blowN
Horrid yell and crack of rifleO
Mingle as the flames ariseP
With the tomahawk they stifleO
Mothers' wails and children's criesP
Men and women to the ferryD
Fly from many a blazing cotQ
Brave and ready grim and steadyD
Mauley mans the ferry boatR
-
Can they cross the ambushed riverF
'Tis for life the only chanceS
Only this may some deliverF
From the scalping knife and lanceS
Through the throng of wailing womenT
Frantic men in terror burstU
Back ye cowards thundered MauleyO
I will take the women firstU
Then with brawny arms and leverF
Back the craven men he smoteU
Brave and ready grim and steadyU
Mauley mans the ferry boatU
-
To and fro across the riverF
Plies the little mercy craftU
While from ambushed gun and quiverF
On it falls the fatal shaftU
Trembling from the burning villageV
Still the terror stricken flyO
For the Indians' love of pillageW
Stays the bloody tragedyU
At the windlass bar bare headedU
Bare his brawny arms and throatU
Brave and ready grim and steadyU
Mauley mans the ferry boatU
-
Hark a sudden burst of war whoopsX
They are bent on murder nowY
Down the ferry road they rallyU
Led by furious Little CrowN
Frantic mothers clasp their childrenT
And the help of God imploreZ
Frantic men leap in the riverF
Ere the boat can reach the shoreZ
Mauley helps the weak and woundedU
Till the last soul is afloatU
Brave and ready grim and steadyU
Mauley mans the ferry boatU
-
Speed the craft The fierce DakotasA2
Whoop and hasten to the shoreZ
And a shower of shot and arrowsB2
On the crowded boat they pourZ
Fast it floats across the riverF
Managed by the master handU
Laden with a freight so preciousC2
God be thanked it reaches landU
Where is Mauley grim and steadyU
Shall his brave deed be forgotU
Grasping still the windlass leverF
Dead he lies upon the boatU
