On the death of Captain Hiram A CoatsA
my old schoolmate and friendB
-
-
Dead or is it a dreamC
Only the voice of a dreamC
Dead in the prime of his yearsD
And laid in the lap of the dustE
Only a handful of ashesF
Moldering down into dustE
-
Strong and manly was heG
Strong and tender and trueH
Proud in the prime of his yearsD
Strong in the strength of the justE
A heart that was half a lion'sI
And half the heart of a girlJ
Tender to all that was tenderK
And true to all that was trueH
Bold in the battle of lifeL
And bold on the bloody fieldM
First at the call of his countryG
First in the front of the foeN
Hope of the years was hisO
The golden and garnered sheavesP
Fair on the hills of autumnQ
Reddened the apples of peaceR
-
Dead or is it a dreamC
Dead in the prime of his yearsD
And laid in the lap of the dustE
-
Aye it is but a dreamC
For the life of man is a dreamC
Dead in the prime of his yearsD
And laid in the lap of the dustE
Only a handful of ashesF
Moldering down into dustE
-
Only a handful of ashesF
Moldering down into dustE
Aye but what of the breathS
Blown out of the bosom of GodT
What of the spirit that breathedU
And burned in the temple of clayV
Dust unto dust returnsW
The dew drop returns to the seaG
The flash from the flint and the steelX
Returns to its source in the sunY
Change cometh forever and ayeZ
But forever nothing is lostA2
The dew drop that sinks in the sandB2
Nor the sunbeam that falls in the seaG
Ah life is only a linkC2
In the endless chain of changeD2
Death giveth the dust to the dustE
And the soul to the infinite soulE2
For aye since the morning of manF2
-
Since the human rose up from the bruteG2
Hath Hope like a beacon of lightH2
Like a star in the rift of the stormI2
Been writ by the finger of GodT
On the longing hearts of menJ2
O follow no goblin fearK2
O cringe to no cruel creedL2
Nor chase the shadow of doubtM2
Till the brain runs mad with despairN2
Stretch forth thy hand O manF2
To the winds and the quaking earthO2
To the heaving and falling seaG
To the ultimate stars and feelX
The throb of the spirit of GodT
The pulse of the UniverseP2
