Dead or is it a dreamA
Only the voice of a dreamA
Dead in the prime of his yearsB
And laid in the lap of the dustC
Only a handful of ashesD
Moldering down into dustC
-
Strong and manly was heE
Strong and tender and trueF
Proud in the prime of his yearsB
Strong in the strength of the justC
A heart that was half a lion'sG
And half the heart of a girlH
Tender to all that was tenderI
And true to all that was trueF
Bold in the battle of lifeJ
And bold on the bloody fieldK
First at the call of his countryE
First in the front of the foeL
Hope of the years was hisM
The golden and garnered sheavesN
Fair on the hills of autumnO
Reddened the apples of peaceP
-
Dead or is it a dreamA
Dead in the prime of his yearsB
And laid in the lap of the dustC
-
Aye it is but a dreamA
For the life of man is a dreamA
Dead in the prime of his yearsB
And laid in the lap of the dustC
Only a handful of ashesD
Moldering down into dustC
-
Only a handful of ashesD
Moldering down into dustC
Aye but what of the breathQ
Blown out of the bosom of GodR
What of the spirit that breathedS
And burned in the temple of clayT
Dust unto dust returnsU
The dew drop returns to the seaE
The flash from the flint and the steelV
Returns to its source in the sunW
Change cometh forever and ayeX
But forever nothing is lostY
The dew drop that sinks in the sandZ
Nor the sunbeam that falls in the seaE
Ah life is only a linkA2
In the endless chain of changeB2
Death giveth the dust to the dustC
And the soul to the infinite soulC2
For aye since the morning of manD2
-
Since the human rose up from the bruteE2
Hath Hope like a beacon of lightF2
Like a star in the rift of the stormG2
Been writ by the finger of GodR
On the longing hearts of menH2
O follow no goblin fearI2
O cringe to no cruel creedJ2
Nor chase the shadow of doubtK2
Till the brain runs mad with despairL2
Stretch forth thy hand O manD2
To the winds and the quaking earthM2
To the heaving and falling seaE
To the ultimate stars and feelV
The throb of the spirit of GodR
The pulse of the UniverseN2
