The long winter wanes On the wingsA
of the spring come the geese and the mallardsB
On the bare oak the red robin singsA
and the crocus peeps up on the prairiesC
And the bobolink pipes but he bringsA
of the blue eyed brave White Chief no tidingsA
With the waning of winter alasD
waned the life of the aged Ta te psinE
Ere the wild pansies peeped from the grassD
to the Land of the Spirits he journeyedF
Like a babe in its slumber he passedG
or the snow from the hill tops of AprilH
And the dark eyed Winona at lastG
stood alone by the graves of her kindredI
When their myriad mouths opened the treesC
to the sweet dew of heaven and the raindropsJ
And the April showers fell on the leasC
on his mound fell the tears of WinonaE
Round her drooping form gathered the yearsK
and the spirits unseen of her kindredI
As low in the midst of her tearsL
at the grave of her father she chantedI
-
E yo tan han e yay wah ke yayM
E yo tan han e yay wah ke yayM
E yo tan han e yay wah ke yayM
Ma kah kin hay chay dan tay han wan kayM
Tu way ne ktay snee e yay chen e wah chayN
E yo tan han e yay wah ke yayM
E yo tan han e yay wah ke yayM
Ma kah kin hay chay dan tay han wan kayM

TRANSLATIONE
-
Sore is my sorrowO
Sore is my sorrowO
Sore is my sorrowO
The earth alone lastsP
I speak as one dyingQ
Sore is my sorrowO
Sore is my sorrowO
The earth alone lastsP
-
Still hope like a star in the nightR
gleaming oft through the broken clouds somberS
Cheered the heart of Winona and brightR
on her dreams beamed the face of the FrenchmanE
As the thought of a loved one and lostT
sad and sweet were her thoughts of the White ChiefU
In the moon's mellow light like a ghostV
walked Winona alone by the Ha HaW
Ever wrapped in a dream Far awayM
to the land of the sunrise she wanderedX
On the blue rolling Tanka Mede BRS
in the midst of her dreams she beheld himY
In his white winged canoe like a birdX
to the land of Dakotas returningQ
-
BR Lake Superior The Gitchee Gumee of the ChippewasP
-
And often in fancy she heardX
the dip of his oars on the riverS
On the dark waters glimmered the moonE
but she saw not the boat of the FrenchmanE
On the somber night bugled the loonE
but she heard not the song of the boatmenE
The moon waxed and waned but the starS
of her hope never waned to the settingQ
Through her tears she beheld it afarS
like a torch on the eastern horizonE
He will come he is coming she saidZ
he will come for my White Eagle promisedA2
And low to the bare earth the maidB2
bent her ear for the sound of his footstepsP
He is gone but his voice in my earS
still remains like the voice of the robinE
He is far but his footsteps I hearS
he is coming my White Chief is comingQ
But the moon waxed and waned NevermoreS
will the eyes of Winona behold himY
Far away on the dark rugged shoreS
of the blue Gitchee Gumee he lingersP
No tidings the rising sun bringsP
no tidings the star of the eveningQ
But morning and evening she singsP
like a turtle dove widowed and waitingQ
-
Ake u ake u ake uC2
Ma cante maseecaQ
Ake u ake u ake uC2
Ma cante masecaQ
-
Come again come again come againE
For my heart is sadD2
Come again come again come againE
For my heart is sadD2
