After the Battle of GettysburgA
-
-
Float in the winds of heaven O tattered FlagB
Emblem of hope to all the misruled worldC
Thy field of golden stars is rent and redD
Dyed in the blood of brothers madly spilledE
By brother hands upon the mother soilF
O fatal Upas of the savage Nile CTG
Transplanted hither rooted multipliedH
Watered with bitter tears and sending forthI
Thy venom vapors till the land is madJ
Thy day is done A million blades are swungK
To lay thy jungles open to the sunL
A million torches fire thy blasted bolesM
A million hands shall drag thy fibers outN
And feed the fires till every root and branchO
Lie in dead ashes From the blackened soilF
Enriched and moistened with fraternal bloodP
Beside the palm shall spring the olive treeQ
And every breeze shall waft the happy songR
Of Freedom crowned with olive twigs and flowersS
-
Yea Patriot Flag of our old patriot siresT
Honored victorious on an hundred fieldsU
Where side by side for Freedom's mother landV
Her Southern sons and Northern fighting fellW
And side by side in glorious graves reposeX
-
CT African slaveryQ
-
I see the dawn of glory grander stillY
When hand in hand upon this battle fieldZ
The blue eyed maidens of the MerrimacA2
With dewy roses from the Granite HillsB2
And dark eyed daughters from the land of palmsC2
With orange blossoms from the broad St JohnsD2
In solemn concert singing as they goE2
Shall strew the graves of these fraternal deadD
The day of triumph comes O blood stained FlagB
Washed clean and lustrous in the morning lightF2
Of a new era thou shalt float againG2
In more than pristine glory o'er the landV
Peace blest and re united On the seasH2
Thou shalt be honored to the farthest isleI2
The oppressed of foreign lands shall flock the shoresJ2
To look upon and bless thee Mothers shall liftK2
Their infants to behold thee as a starL2
New born in heaven to light the darksome worldC
The children weeping round the desolateM2
Sore stricken mother in the saddened homeN2
Whereto the father shall no more returnO2
In future years will proudly boast the bloodP
Of him who bravely fell defending theeQ
And these misguided brothers who would tearP2
Thy starry field asunder and would trailQ2
Their own proud flag and history in the dustR2
Ere many years will bless thee dear old FlagB
That thou didst triumph even over themS2
Aye even they with proudly swelling heartsT2
Will see the glory thou shalt shortly wearP2
And new born stars swing in upon thy fieldZ
In lustrous clusters Come O glorious dayU2
Of Freedom crowned with Peace God's will be doneL
God's will is peace on earth good will to menG2
The chains all broken and the bond all freeQ
O may this nation learn to war no moreV2
Yea into plow shares may these brothers beatW2
Their swords and into pruning hooks their spearsX2
Clasp hands again and plant these battle fieldsU
With golden corn and purple clustered vinesY2
And side by side re build the broken wallsZ2
Joined and cemented as one solid stoneA3
With patriot love and Christ's sweet charityQ
