May is Mary's month and IA
Muse at that and wonder whyA
Her feasts follow reasonB
Dated due to season mdashC
-
Candlemas Lady DayD
But the Lady Month MayD
Why fasten that upon herE
With a feasting in her honourE
-
Is it only its being brighterE
Than the most are must delight herE
Is it opportunestD
And flowers finds soonestD
-
Ask of her the mighty motherE
Her reply puts this otherE
Question What is Spring mdashC
Growth in every thing mdashC
-
Flesh and fleece fur and featherE
Grass and greenworld all togetherE
Star eyed strawberry breastedD
Throstle above her nestedD
-
Cluster of bugle blue eggs thinF
Forms and warms the life withinF
And bird and blossom swellG
In sod or sheath or shellG
-
All things rising all things sizingH
Mary sees sympathisingH
With that world of goodD
Nature's motherhoodD
-
Their magnifying of each its kindD
With delight calls to mindD
How she did in her storedD
Magnify the LordD
-
Well but there was more than thisI
Spring's universal blissI
Much had much to sayD
To offering Mary MayD
-
When drop of blood and foam dappleG
Bloom lights the orchard appleG
And thicket and thorp are merryE
With silver surfed cherryE
-
And azuring over greybell makesJ
Wood banks and brakes wash wet like lakesJ
And magic cuckoocallG
Caps clears and clinches all mdashC
-
This ecstasy all through mothering earthK
Tells Mary her mirth till Christ's birthK
To remember and exultationF
In God who was her salvationF
