O sweet are the memories when backward we gazeB
Through the vista of years to our schoolboy daysB
When faces now vanished to the vision appearC
And the music of voices long hushed we can hearD
As together we romped where the school house stoodE
Or joyfully wended our way through the woodE
Where placidly lay in the valley beyondF
The moss covered waters of Tom Barbee's pondF

Though scattered by Time o'er the face of the earthG
And sorrow and anguish have succeeded to mirthG
Still many there be whose mist bedewed eyeA
Looks longingly back while the breast heaves a sighA
To that far away time when together we playedH
In the school house yard or on Saturdays strayedH
Where the knots in our sleeves were tied tight as a bondF
As we splashed and we dived in Tom Barbee's pondF

The pleasures of memory by Rogers were linedI
With rhythm as sweet as in verse you will findI
But could he e'er picture one half of the joysJ
We had when we wandered as barefooted boysJ
Through the woods and the fields and the meadows out thereK
With our sun blistered backs and the burrs in our hairK
Or recall to the mind a remembrance more fondF
Than bathing and swimming in Tom Barbee's pondF
