Memoria In ëterna Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCCDDEFGGGG HHDDIIJJKKDD LLMMMMNNNOOO PPQQRSTTUUOO| Sweet Memory thou faculty divine | A |
| Triumphant o'er the cruel hand of Time | B |
| On thy tablets we may trace | C |
| The lines his fingers ne'er efface | C |
| And take with us till latest day | D |
| The images that light our way | D |
| And picture thus in a shadowy form | E |
| The loved and lost he's from us torn | F |
| Their lids by Death so early sealed | G |
| Life's crimson tide by him congealed | G |
| The tyrant has not all concealed | G |
| They in thy mirror still revealed | G |
| - | |
| Before the morning sunbeams kissed | H |
| The face of Nature veiled in mist | H |
| And heralded with golden ray | D |
| The opening of the perfect day | D |
| Ere yet the sable shades of night | I |
| At dawn's approach had winged their flight | I |
| We've listed to the whispering breeze | J |
| That's wafted o'er the trembling trees | J |
| And seemed to hear the voices sweet | K |
| Of loved ones now we ne'er can meet | K |
| Till earthly night shall pass away | D |
| Supplanted by immortal day | D |
| - | |
| And thus in retrospective mood | L |
| Alone with Nature's solitude | L |
| In some secluded sylvan dell | M |
| Her myriad voices float and swell | M |
| And flitting shadows softly tell | M |
| Of dear ones lost yet loved so well | M |
| Then to the sunny home where dwelt | N |
| Ere yet the envious tyrant dealt | N |
| The blow that blighted hopes have felt | N |
| Fond fancy wanders and can see | O |
| Once happy scenes that ne'er can be | O |
| Lost in thy shades O Memory | O |
| - | |
| But those to us so cruelly denied | P |
| Are drifting now upon some fairer tide | P |
| Their scattered ashes on Hope's pinions rise | Q |
| And people realms beyond the azure skies | Q |
| Then may our faltering footsteps lead | R |
| To where fond hearts may never bleed | S |
| Where vanished faces cherished forms | T |
| Are anchored safe from life's rude storms | T |
| Where strains seraphic soft and low | U |
| The rapt ear greet and we shall know | U |
| The loved and lost we only see | O |
| In visions of sweet Memory | O |
