I-
-
O gifted one of the Sunny South with lips so eloquentB
In whose great heart no malice e'er was foundC
And now thou art a messenger of Peace by heaven sentD
On mission of fraternity to heal the cankering woundC
-
-
II-
-
In that dread day when fratricidal strifeE
Convulsed with passion crimsoned with its bloodF
No nobler son than thou who staked his lifeE
With veterans Gray withstood the overwhelming floodF
-
-
III-
-
No sweeter tribute could be paid by mortal tongueG
No nobler sentiment the human heart could fillH
In grander strains no poet's praises e'er were sungG
Of private soldier than thy words that burn and thrillH
-
-
IVE
-
No treasured wrong within thy noble soulI
Has tainted with its slimy trail of hateJ
No broader love of country could embrace the wholeI
Or bow more gracefully to iron hand of fateJ
-

VE
-
Speak on And scatter broadcast healing seedK
That shall a harvest of good feeling yieldL
And Peace no less than War shall lend her meedL
And crown anew this hero of the bloody fieldL
