O what memories sweet entwineB
Around each word and faded lineB
Yellow and dim with the touch of yearsC
And soiled with the marks of tearsD
A sacred treasure of the heartE
Which death alone can from him partE
A letter cherished as no otherF
And ending with the name of MotherF

Writ it was to a wayward boyG
When life to him seemed full of joyG
Pleading with him so to liveH
That he her heart no grief would giveI
That after years might ne'er be fraughtJ
With sorrow that himself had wroughtJ
May guardian angels 'round you hoverF
She wrote and signed the name of MotherF

The paper has the taint of mustK
The hand that traced the lines is dustK
And silvery hair is on the headL
Of that same boy since first he readL
This missive from the sainted oneM
That bore her love to an erring sonM
More fondly prized than any otherF
'Twas written by the hand of MotherF
