Ever as sinks the day on sea or landA
Called or uncalled you take your kindred postsB
At helm and lever wheel and switch you standA
On the world's wastes and melancholy coastsB
Strength to the patient handA
To all alert and faithful in the nightC
May there by LightC
-
Now roars the wrenching train along the darkD
How many watchers guard the barren wayE
In signal towers at stammering keys to markD
The word the whispering horizons sayE
To all that see and harkD
To all alert and faithful in the nightC
May there be LightC
-
On ruthless streets on byways sad with sinF
Half hated by the blinded ones you guardG
Guard well lest crime unheeded enter inF
The dark is cruel and the vigil hardG
The hours of guilt beginF
To all alert and faithful in the nightC
May there be LightC
-
Now storms the pulsing hull adown the seaH
Gaze onward anxious eyes to mist or starI
Where foams the heaving highway blank and freeH
Where wait the reef the berg the cape the barI
Whatever menace beH
To all alert and faithful in the nightC
May there be LightC
-
Now the surf rumble rides the midnight windJ
And grave patrols are on ocean edgeK
Now soars the rocket where the billows grindJ
Discerned too late on sunken shoal or ledgeK
To all that seek and findJ
To all alert and faithful in the nightC
May there be LightC
-
On lonely headlands gleam the lamps that warnL
Star steady or ablink like dragon eyesM
Govern your rays or wake the giant hornL
Within the fog that welds the sea and skiesM
Far distant runs the mornL
To all alert and faithful in the nightC
May there be LightC
-
Now glow the lesser lamps in rooms of painN
Where nurse and doctor watch the joyless breathO
Drawn in a sigh and sighing lost againP
Who waits without the threshold Life or DeathO
Reckon you loss or gainN
To all alert and faithful in the nightC
May there be LightC
-
Honor to you that guard our welfare nowQ
To you that constant in the past have stoodR
To all by whom the future shall avowQ
Unconquerable fortitude and goodR
Upon the sleepless browQ
Of each alert and faithful in the nightC
May there be LightC
