Woodman, Spare That Tree! Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD AEAEFGFG HIHIJCKC LMLMNDND

Woodman spare that treeA
Touch not a single boughB
In youth it sheltered meA
And I'll protect it nowB
'Twas my forefather's handC
That placed it near his cotD
There woodman let it standC
Thy axe shall harm it notD
-
That old familiar treeA
Whose glory and renownE
Are spread o'er land and seaA
And wouldst thou hew it downE
Woodman forebear thy strokeF
Cut not its earth bound tiesG
Oh spare that aged oakF
Now towering to the skiesG
-
When but an idle boyH
I sought its grateful shadeI
In all their gushing joyH
Here too my sisters playedI
My mother kissed me hereJ
My father pressed my handC
Forgive this foolish tearK
But let that old oak standC
-
My heart strings round thee clingL
Close as thy bark old friendM
Here shall the wild bird singL
And still thy branches bendM
Old tree the storm still braveN
And woodman leave the spotD
While I've a hand to saveN
thy axe shall harm it notD
