We were boys togetherB
And never can forgetC
The school house near the heatherB
In childhood where we metC
The humble home to memory dearD
Its sorrows and its joysE
Where woke the transient smile or tearF
When you and I were boysE
-
We were youths togetherB
And castles built in airF
Your heart was like a featherB
And mine weighed down with careF
To you came wealth with manhood's primeG
To me it brought alloysE
Foreshadowed in the primrose timeG
When you and I were boysE
-
We're old men togetherB
The friends we loved of yoreH
With leaves of autumn weatherB
Are gone for evermoreH
How blest to age the impulse givenI
The hope time ne'er destroysE
Which led our thoughts from earth to heavenI
When you and I were boysE
