Walter Gay Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCAB ADEAD ABFAB AGAAG AHIAH

To know a man well it is said Walter GayA
On shipboard with him you should beB
If this maxim's true then well I know youC
For we sailed together the sea Walter GayA
For we sailed together the seaB
-
I now watch the star from the strand Walter GayA
As oft from the surge I did thenD
Like that all alone you sparkled and shoneE
The clear northern star among men Walter GayA
The clear northern star among menD
-
May your future course like the past Walter GayA
From wreck and misfortune be freeB
your sorrows and care fade into the airF
Or vanish like foam on the sea Walter GayA
Or vanish like foam on the seaB
-
The friendship that's formed on the wave Walter GayA
Is deeper than plummet may soundG
That can not decay till we lose our wayA
Or death runs the vessel aground Walter GayA
Or death runs the vessel agroundG
-
When life's voyage ends may your bark Walter GayA
Spread sail like the wings of a doveH
And when lulls the wind safe anchorage findI
Within the good harbor above Walter GayA
Within the good harbor aboveH
