The Main-truck; Or, A Leap For Life A Nautical Ballad Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCBDCEFE GHGHIJIJ AEAEEKEK ECECLELE EEEEMAMA

Founded upon a well known tale from the pen of the late William Leggett EsqA
-
-
-
-
Old Ironsides at anchor layB
In the harbor of MahonC
A dead calm rested on the bayB
The waves to sleep had goneD
When little Jack the captain's sonC
With gallant hardihoodE
Climbed shroud and spar and then uponF
The main truck rose and stoodE
-
A shudder ran through every veinG
All eyes were turned on highH
There stood the boy with dizzy brainG
Between the sea and skyH
No hold had he above belowI
Alone he stood in airJ
At that far height none dared to goI
No aid could reach him thereJ
-
We gazed but not a man could speakA
With horror all aghastE
In groups with pallid brow and cheekA
We watched the quivering mastE
The atmosphere grew thick and hotE
And of a lurid hueK
As riveted unto the spotE
Stood officers and crewK
-
The father came on deck He gaspedE
O God Thy will be doneC
Then suddenly a rifle graspedE
And aimed it at his sonC
Jump far out boy into the waveL
Jump or I fire he saidE
That only chance your life can saveL
Jump jump boy He obeyedE
-
He sank he rose he lived he movedE
He for the ship struck outE
On board we hailed the lad belovedE
With many a manly shoutE
His father drew in silent joyM
Those wet arms round his neckA
Then folded to his heart the boyM
And fainted on the deckA
