I've had the heart ache many timesA
At the mere mention of a nameB
I've never woven in my rhymesA
Though from it inspiration cameB
It is in truth a holy thingC
Life cherished from the world apartD
A dove that never tries its wingC
But broods and nestles in the heartD
-
That name of melody recallsE
Her gentle look and winning waysF
Whose portrait hangs on memory's wallsE
In the fond light of other daysF
In the dream land of PoetryG
Reclining in its leafy bowersH
Her bright eyes in the stars I seeG
And her sweet semblance in the flowersH
-
Her artless dalliance and graceI
The joy that lighted up her browJ
The sweet expression of her faceI
Her form it stands before me nowJ
And I can fancy that I hearK
The woodland songs she used to singC
Which stole to my attending earK
Like the first harbingers of springC
-
The beauty of the earth was hersH
And hers the purity of heavenL
Alone of all her worshippersH
To me her maiden vows were givenL
They little know the human heartD
Who think such love with time expiresH
Once kindled it will ne'er departD
But burn through life with all its firesH
-
We parted doomed no more to meetM
The blow fell with a stunning powerN
And yet my pulse will strangely beatM
At the remembrance of that hourN
But time and change their healing broughtO
And years have passed in seeming gleeG
But still alone of her I've thoughtO
Who's now a memory to meG
-
There may be many who will deemP
This strain a wayward youthful follyG
To be derided as a dreamP
Born of the poet's melancholyG
The wealth of worlds if it were mineQ
With all that follows in its trainR
I would with gratitude resignQ
To dream that dream of love againS
