Rhyme Scheme: A BCBCDEDE FGFGDHDH IJIJDKDK HLMLBNBN OPOFQRQS BQBQOOOO TUTUVWVX

Written at the request of the corporation of the city of New YorkA

-
-
Gushing from this living fountainB
Music pours a falling strainC
As the goddess of the mountainB
Comes with all her sparkling trainC
From her grotto springs advancingD
Glittering in her feathery sprayE
Woodland fays beside her dancingD
She pursues her winding wayE
-
Gently o'er the rippling waterF
In her coral shallop brightG
Glides the rock king's dove eyed daughterF
Decked in robes of virgin whiteG
Nymphs and naiads sweetly smilingD
Urge her bark with pearly handH
Merrily the sylph beguilingD
From the nooks of fairy landH
-
Swimming on the snow curled billowI
See the river spirits fairJ
Lay their cheeks as on a pillowI
With the foam beads in their hairJ
Thus attended hither wendingD
Floats the lovely oread nowK
Eden's arch of promise bendingD
Over her translucent browK
-
Hail the wanderer from a far landH
Bind her flowing tresses upL
Crown her with a fadeless garlandM
And with crystal brim the cupL
From her haunts of deep seclusionB
Let intemperance greet her tooN
And the heat of his delusionB
Sprinkle with this mountain dewN
-
Water leaps as if delightedO
While her conquered foes retireP
Pale Contagion flies affrightedO
With the baffled demon FireF
Safety dwells in her dominionsQ
Health and Beauty with her moveR
And entwine their circling pinionsQ
In a sisterhood of loveS
-
Water shouts a glad hosannaB
Bubbles up the earth to blessQ
Cheers it like the precious mannaB
In the barren wildernessQ
Here we wondering gaze assembledO
Like the grateful Hebrew bandO
When the hidden fountain trembledO
And obeyed the prophet's wandO
-
Round the aqueducts of storyT
As the mists of Lethe throngU
Croton's waves in all their gloryT
Troop in melody alongU
Ever sparkling bright and singleV
Will this rock ribbed stream appearW
When posterity shall mingleV
Like the gathered waters hereX
