The Chieftain's Daughter Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDED FGFGHDHD IJIJKDKD

Upon the barren sandA
A single captive stoodB
Around him came with bow and brandA
The red men of the woodB
Like him of old his doom he hearsC
Rock bound on ocean's rimD
The chieftain's daughter knelt in tearsE
And breathed a prayer for himD
-
Above his head in airF
The savage war club swungG
The frantic girl in wild despairF
Her arms about him flungG
Then shook the warriors of the shadeH
Like leaves on aspen limbD
Subdued by that heroic maidH
Who breathed a prayer for himD
-
Unbind him gasped the chiefI
Obey your king's decreeJ
He kissed away her tears of griefI
And set the captive freeJ
'Tis ever thus when in life's stormK
Hope's star to man grows dimD
An angel kneels in woman's formK
And breathes a prayer for himD
