When I was in my teensA
I loved dear MargarettaB
I know not what it meansA
I can not now forget herC
That vision of the pastB
My head is ever crazingD
Yet when I saw her lastB
I could not speak for gazingD
Oh lingering bud of MayE
Dear as when first I met herC
Worn in my heart alwaysF
Life cherished MargarettaB
-
We parted near the stileG
As morn was faintly breakingD
For many a weary mileG
Oh how my heart was achingD
But distance time and changeH
Have lost me MargarettaB
And yet 'tis sadly strangeH
That I can not forget herC
O queen of rural maidsI
My dark eyed MagarettaB
The heart the mind upbraidsI
That struggles to forget herC
-
My love I know will seemJ
A wayward boyish follyK
But ah it was a dreamJ
Most sweet most melancholyK
Were mine the world's domainL
To me 'twere fortune betterC
To be a boy againM
And dream of MargarettaB
Oh memory of the pastB
Why linger to regret herC
My first love was my lastB
And that is MargarettaB
