The knell was tolled the requiem sungA
The solemn burial service readB
And tributes from the heart and tongueA
Were rendered to the deadB
-
The dead Religion answers NoC
She is not dead She can not dieD
A mortal left this vale of woC
An angel lives on highD
-
The earth upon her coffin lidE
Sounded a hollow harsh adieuF
The mound arose and she was hidE
For ever from the viewF
-
For ever Drearily the thoughtG
Passed like an ice bolt through the brainH
When Faith the recollection broughtG
That we shall meet againI
-
The mourners wound their silent wayJ
Adown the mountain's gentle slopeK
Which basking in the smile of MayJ
Looked cheerfully as hopeK
-
As hope What hope That boundless OneL
God in His love and mercy gaveM
Which brightens with salvation's sunL
The darkness of the graveM
