Spoken by Mrs ChapmanA

-
Nay Mr Simpson 'Tis not kind politeB
To shut me out sir I'm in such a frightB
I can not speak the lines I'm sure Oh fieC
To say I must but if I must I'll tryD
-
From him I turn to these more generous soulsE
The drama's patrons and the friends of KNOWLESE
Why what a brilliant galaxy is hereF
What stars adorn this mimic hemisphereG
Names that shine brightest on our country's pageH
The props of science literature the stageH
Above below around me woman smilesI
The fairest floweret of these western wildsJ
All come to pay the tribute of their praiseK
To the first dramatist of modern daysK
And welcome to the green home of the freeL
With heart and hand the bard of libertyL
-
His is a wizard wand Its potent spellM
Broke the deep slumber of the patriot TellM
And placed him on his native hills againN
The pride and glory of his fellow menN
The poet speaks for Rome Virginia bleedsO
Bold Caius Gracclius in the forum pleadsO
Alfred the Great because the good and wiseP
Bids prostrate England burst her bonds and riseP
Sweet Bess the Beggar's Daughter beauty's queenQ
Walks forth the joy and wonder of the sceneQ
The Hunchback enters kindly fond severeG
And last behold the glorious Wife appearG
-
These are the bright creations of a mindR
Glowing with genius chastened and refinedR
In all he's written be this praise his lotS
Not one word dying would he wish to blotS
-
Upon my life 'tis no such easy thingT
To land the bard unless an eagle's wingT
My muse would take and fixing on the sunA
Her burning eye soar as his own has doneA
-
Did you speak sir What madam did he sayU
Wrangling for shame before your wedding dayU
Nay gentle lady by thine eyes of blueV
And vermeil blushes I did not mean youV
Bless me what friends at every glance I seeL
Artists and authors men of high degreeL
Grave politicians who have weighed each chanceW
The next election and the war with FranceW
Doctors just come from curing half a scoreX
And belles from killing twice as many moreX
Judges recorders aldermen and mayorsY
Seated like true republicans down stairsZ
All wear a glow of sunshine in their facesA2
Might well become Apollo and the gracesB2
Except one yonder with a look infernalC2
Like a blurred page from Fanny Kemble's JournalC2
-
But to my task The muse when I beganD2
Spoke of the writer welcome ye the manD2
Genius at best acts but an humble partE2
Unless obedient to an honest heartE2
And such a one is his for whom to nightB
These walls are crowded with this cheering sightB
Ye love the poet oft have conned him o'erF2
Knew ye the man ye'd love him ten times moreX
Ye critics spare him from your tongue and quillG2
Ye gods applaud him and ye fops be stillG2
