How shall we honor the man who createsA
Asked the Bedouin chief the poet AntarB
Who unto the truth flings open our gatesA
Or fashions new thoughts from the light of a starC
Or forges with craft of his finger and brainD
Some marvelous weapon we copy in vainD
Or chants to the winds a wild song that shallE
wander forever undyingF
-
See His reward is in envies and hatesA
In lips that deny or in stabs that may killG
Nay said the smith for there's one here who waitsA
Humbly to serve you with unmeasured skillG
Sure that no utmost devotion can failH
Offered to you nor unfriended assailH
The heart of the hero and poet Antar whoseI
fame is undyingF
-
Speak said the chief Then the smith O AntarB
It is I who would serve you I know by the soulJ
Of the poet within you no envy can barC
The stream of your gratitude once let it rollJ
Listen The lightning your camel that slewK
I caught and wrought in this sword blade for youK
Sword that no foe shall encounter unhurt orL
depart from undyingF
-
Burst from the eyes of Antar a swift rain Gratitude'sI
glittering drops as he threwK
One shining arm round the smith like a chainD
Closer the man to his bosom he drewK
Thankful caressing with Great is my debtM
Yea said the smith and his eyelids were wetM
I knew the sword Dham would unite me withN
you in an honor undyingF
-
So asked the chief as his thumb point at willG
Silently over the sword's edge playedO
Ay said the smith but there's one thing stillG
Who is the smiter shall smite with this bladeO
Jealous their eyes met and fury awokeP
I am the smiter Antar cried One strokeP
Rolled the smith's head from his neck and gaveQ
him remembrance undyingF
-
Seek now who may no search will availH
No man the mate of this weapon shall ownR
Yet in his triumph the chieftain made wailH
Slain is the craftsman the one friend aloneR
Able to honor the man who createsI
I slew him I who am poet O fatesI
Grant that the envious blade slaying artists shallE
make them undyingF
