Go said the star to its lightA
Follow your fathomless flightA
Into the dreams of spaceB
Carry the joy of my faceB
Go said the star to its lightA
Tell me the tale of your flightA
-
As the mandate rangC
The heavens throughD
Quick the ray sprangC
Unheard it flewD
Sped by the touch of an unseen spurE
It crumbled the dusk of the deepF
That folds the worlds in sleepF
And shot through night with noiseless stirE
-
Then came the dayG
And all that swift arrayG
Of diamond sparkles diedH
And lo the far star criedH
My light has lost its wayG
Ages on ages passedI
The light returned at lastI
-
What have you seenJ
What have you heardK
O ray sereneJ
O flame winged birdK
I loosed on endless airL
Why do you look so faint and whiteA
Said the star to its lightA
-
O star said the tremulous rayG
Grief and struggle I foundM
Horror impeded my wayG
Many a star and sunN
I passed and touched on my roundM
Many a life undoneN
I lit with a tender gleamO
I shone in the lover's eyesP
And soothed the maiden's dreamO
But alas for the stifling mist of liesP
Alas for the wrath of the battle fieldQ
Where my glance was mixed with bloodR
And woe for the hearts by hate congealedQ
And the crime that rolls like a floodR
Too vast is the world for meS
Too vast for the sparkling dewD
Of a force like yours to renewD
Hopeless the world's immensityD
The suns go on without endD
The universe holds no friendD
And so I come back to youD
-
Go said the star to its lightD
You have not told me arightD
This you have taught I am oneN
In a million of million othersT
Stars or planets or menU
And all of these are my brothersT
Carry that message and thenU
My guerdon of praise you have wonN
Say that I serve in my placeB
Say I will hide my own faceB
Ere the sorrows of others I shunN
So then my trust you'll requiteD
Go said the star to its lightD
