Valleys lay in sunny vaporA
And a radiance mild was shedB
From each tree that like a taperA
At a feast stood Then we saidB
Our feast too shall soon be spreadB
Of good Thanksgiving turkeyC
-
And already still NovemberA
Drapes her snowy table hereD
Fetch a log then coax the emberA
Fill your hearts with old time cheerE
Heaven be thanked for one more yearE
And our Thanksgiving turkeyC
-
Welcome brothers all our partyC
Gathered in the homestead oldF
Shake the snow off and with heartyC
Hand shakes drive away the coldF
Else your plate you'll hardly holdF
Of good Thanksgiving turkeyC
-
When the skies are sad and murkyC
'Tis a cheerful thing to meetG
Round this homely roast of turkeyC
Pilgrims pausing just to greetG
Then with earnest grace to eatG
A new Thanksgiving turkeyC
-
And the merry feast is freightedG
With its meanings true and deepH
Those we've loved and those we've hatedG
All to day the rite will keepH
All to day their dishes heapH
With plump Thanksgiving turkeyC
-
But how many hearts must tingleI
Now with mournful memoriesJ
In the festal wine shall mingleI
Unseen tears perhaps from eyesK
That look beyond the board where liesK
Our plain Thanksgiving turkeyC
-
See around us drawing nearerA
Those faint yearning shapes of airL
Friends than whom earth holds none dearerA
No alas they are not thereL
Have they then forgot to shareL
Our good Thanksgiving turkeyC
-
Some have gone away and tarriedG
Strangely long by some strange waveM
Some have turned to foes we carriedG
Some unto the pine girt graveM
They 'll come no more so joyous braveM
To take Thanksgiving turkeyC
-
Nay repine not Let our laughterA
Leap like firelight up againN
Soon we touch the wide HereafterA
Snow field yet untrod of menN
Shall we meet once more and whenN
To eat Thanksgiving turkeyC
