Strike hands young menA
We know not whenA
Death or disaster comesB
Mightier than battle drumsB
To summon us awayC
Death bids us say farewellD
To all we love nor stayC
For tears and who can tellD
How soon misfortune's handE
May smite us where we standE
Dragging us down aloofF
Under the swift world's hoofF
-
Strike hands for faith and powerG
To gladden the passing hourG
To wield the sword or raise a songH
To press the grape or crush out wrongH
And strengthen rightI
Give me the man of sturdy palmJ
And vigorous brainK
Hearty companionable saneK
'Mid all commotions calmJ
Yet filled with quick enthusiastic fireG
Give me the manL
Whose impulses aspireM
And all his features seem to say I canL
-
Strike hands young menA
'Tis yours to help rebuild the StateN
And keep the Nation greatN
With act and speech and penA
'Tis yours to spreadO
The morning redO
That ushers in a grander dayC
To scatter prejudice that blindsP
And hail fresh thoughts in noble mindsP
To overthrow bland tyranniesQ
That cheat the people and with slow diseaseQ
Change the Republic to a mockeryR
Your words can teach that libertyR
Means more than just to cry We're freeR
While bending to some new found yokeS
So shall each unjust bond be brokeS
Each toiler gain his meet rewardT
And life sound forth a truer chordT
-
Ah if we so have strivenU
And mutually the grasp have givenU
Of brotherhoodV
To work each other and the whole race goodV
What matter if the dreamW
Come only partly trueX
And all the things accomplished seemW
Feeble and fewX
At least when summer's flame burns lowY
And on our heads the drifting snowY
Settles and staysZ
We shall rejoice that in our earlier daysZ
We boldly thenA
Struck hands young menA
