The sea goes up the sky comes downA
Oh can you spy the ancient townA
The granite hills so green and grayB
That rib the land behind the bayB
O ye ho boys Spread her wingsC
Fair winds boys send her homeD
O ye hoE
-
Three years Is it so long that weF
Have lived upon the lonely seaF
Oh often I thought we'd see the townA
When the sea went up and the sky came downA
O ye ho boys Spread her wingsC
-
Even the winter winds would rouseG
A memory of my father's houseG
For round his windows and his doorH
They made the same deep mouthless roarH
O ye ho boys Spread her wingsC
-
And when the summer's breezes beatI
Methought I saw the sunny streetI
Where stood my Kate Beneath her handJ
She gazed far out far out from landJ
O ye ho boys Spread her wingsC
-
Farthest away I oftenest dreamedK
That I was with her Then it seemedK
A single stride the ocean wideL
Had bridged and brought me to her sideL
O ye ho boys Spread her wingsC
-
But though so near we're drawing nowM
'T is farther off I know not howM
We sail and sail we see no homeD
Would that we into port were comeN
O ye ho boys Spread her wingsC
-
At night the same stars o'er the mastO
The mast sways round however fastO
We fly still sways and swings aroundP
One scanty circle's starry boundP
O ye ho boys Spread her wingsC
-
Ah many a month those stars have shoneQ
And many a golden morn has flownQ
Since that so solemn happy mornR
When I away my babe was bornR
O ye ho boys Spread her wingsC
-
And though so near we're drawing nowM
'T is farther off I know not howM
I would not aught amiss had comeN
To babe or mother there at homeD
O ye ho boys Spread her wingsC
-
'T is but a seeming swiftly rushS
The seas beneath I hear the crushS
Of foamy ridges 'gainst the prowM
Longing outspeeds the breeze I knowE
O ye ho boys Spread her wingsC
-
Patience my mates Though not this eveT
We cast our anchor yet believeT
If but the wind holds short the runU
We'll sail in with to morrow's sunU
O ye ho boys Spread her wingsC
Fair winds boys send her homeD
O ye hoE
