The soul of a nation awakingA
High visions of daybreak I sawB
A people renewed the forsakingA
Of sin and the worship of lawB

Sing pine tree shout to the hoarserC
Response of the jubilant seaD
Rush river foam flecked like a courserC
Warn all who are honest and freeD

Our birth star beckons to trialE
The faith of the far fled yearsF
Ere scorn was our share and denialE
Or laughter for patriots' tearsG

And Faith shall come forth the finerC
From trampled thickets of fireC
And the orient open divinerC
Before her the heaven rise higherC

O deep sweet eyes but severerC
Than steel See you yet where he comesH
Our hero Bend your glance nearerC
Speak Faith For as wakening drumsH

Your voice shall set his blood stirringA
His heart shall grow strong like the mainI
When the rowelled winds are spurringA
And the broad tides landward strainI

O hero art thou among usJ
O helper hidest thou stillK
Why hast thou no anthem sung usJ
Why workest thou not our willK

For a smirk of the face or a favorC
Still shelters the cheat where he crawlsL
And the truth we began with needs braverC
Upholders and loftier wallsL

Too long has the land's soul slumberedM
In wearying dreams of gainI
With prosperous falsity cumberedM
And dulled with bribes as a baneI

Yes cunning is civilized evilE
And crafty the gold baited snareC
But virtue in fiery upheavalE
May cast fine device to the airC

Bring us the simple and stalwartM
Purpose of earlier daysN
Come Far better than all were'tM
Our precepts our pride and our laysN
-
That the people in spirit should trembleE
With heed of the God given WordM
That we cease from our boast nor dissembleE
But follow where truth's voice is heardM
-
Come to us mountain dwellerC
Leader wherever thou artM
Skilled from thy cradle a quellerC
Of serpents and sound to the heartM

Modest and mighty and tenderC
Man of an iron moldM
Honest fine grained our defenderC
American souledM
