The soul of a nation awakingA
High visions of daybreak I sawB
A people renewed the forsakingA
Of sin and the worship of lawB
-
Sing pine tree shout to the hoarserC
Response of the jubilant seaD
Rush river foam flecked like a courserC
Warn all who are honest and freeD
-
Our birth star beckons to trialE
The faith of the far fled yearsF
Ere scorn was our share and denialE
Or laughter for patriots' tearsG
-
And Faith shall come forth the finerC
From trampled thickets of fireC
And the orient open divinerC
Before her the heaven rise higherC
-
O deep sweet eyes but severerC
Than steel See you yet where he comesH
Our hero Bend your glance nearerC
Speak Faith For as wakening drumsH
-
Your voice shall set his blood stirringA
His heart shall grow strong like the mainI
When the rowelled winds are spurringA
And the broad tides landward strainI
-
O hero art thou among usJ
O helper hidest thou stillK
Why hast thou no anthem sung usJ
Why workest thou not our willK
-
-
For a smirk of the face or a favorC
Still shelters the cheat where he crawlsL
And the truth we began with needs braverC
Upholders and loftier wallsL
-
Too long has the land's soul slumberedM
In wearying dreams of gainI
With prosperous falsity cumberedM
And dulled with bribes as a baneI
-
Yes cunning is civilized evilE
And crafty the gold baited snareC
But virtue in fiery upheavalE
May cast fine device to the airC
-
Bring us the simple and stalwartM
Purpose of earlier daysN
Come Far better than all were'tM
Our precepts our pride and our laysN
-
That the people in spirit should trembleE
With heed of the God given WordM
That we cease from our boast nor dissembleE
But follow where truth's voice is heardM
-
Come to us mountain dwellerC
Leader wherever thou artM
Skilled from thy cradle a quellerC
Of serpents and sound to the heartM
-
Modest and mighty and tenderC
Man of an iron moldM
Honest fine grained our defenderC
American souledM
