| them in the secret of Thy face from the disturbance of men | B |
| - | |
| Thou shalt protect them in Thy tabernacle from the | C |
| contradiction of tongues | D |
| - | |
| Blessed be the Lord for He hath shewn His wonderful | E |
| mercy to me in a fortified city Psalm xxx | D |
| - | |
| - | |
| Beauty and splendor were on every hand | F |
| Yet strangely crawled dark shadows down the lanes | D |
| Twisting across the fields like dragon shapes | D |
| That smote the air with blackness and devoured | G |
| The life of light and choked the smiling world | H |
| Till it grew livid with a sudden age | I |
| The death of hope | J |
| - | |
| O squandered happiness | D |
| Vain dust of misery powdering life's fresh flower | K |
| The sky was holy but the earth was not | L |
| - | |
| Men ruled but ruled in vain since wretchedness | D |
| Of soul and body for the mass of men | B |
| Made them like dead leaves in an idle drift | M |
| Around the plough of progress as it drove | N |
| Sharp through the glebe of modern days to plant | O |
| A civilized world Ay civilized but not Christian | P |
| - | |
| Civilization is a clarion voice | D |
| Crying in the wilderness a prophet word | G |
| Still unfulfilled And lo along the ways | D |
| Crowded with nations there arose a strife | Q |
| Disturbance of men tongues contradicting tongues | D |
| Madness of noise that scattered multitudes | D |
| A trample of blind feet beneath whose tread | R |
| Truth's bloom shrank withered while incessant mouths | D |
| Howled Progress Change as though all moods of change | S |
| Were fiats of truth eternal | E |
| - | |
| 'Mid the din | T |
| Two pilgrims faring forward saw the light | U |
| In a strong city fortified and moved | V |
| Patiently thither All your steps are vain | W |
| Cried scoffers There is mercy in the world | H |
| But chiefly mercy of man to man For we | X |
| Are good We help our fellows when we can | Y |
| Our charity is enormous Look at these | D |
| Long rolls of rich subscriptions We are good | Z |
| 'T is true God's mercy plays a part in things | D |
| But most is left to us and we judge well | A2 |
| Stay with us in the field of endless war | B2 |
| Here only is health Yon city fortified | A |
| You dream of why its ramparts are as dust | C2 |
| It gives no safety One assaulting sweep | D2 |
| Of our huge cohorts would annul its power | K |
| Crush it in atoms make it meaningless | D |
| - | |
| The pilgrims listened but onward still they moved | V |
| They passed the gates they stood upon a hill | E2 |
| Enclosed but in that strong enclosure free | X |
| Though earth opposed they held the key to heaven | P |
| On came the turbulent multitude in war | B2 |
| Dashing against the city's walls and swept | F2 |
| Through all the streets and robbed and burned and killed | G2 |
| The walls were strong the gates were always open | P |
| And so the invader rioted and was proud | H2 |
| But sudden in seeming triumph the enemy host | I2 |
| Was stricken with death and still the city stayed | J2 |
| Skyward the souls of its defenders rose | D |
| Returning soon in mist intangible | E |
| That flashed with radiance of half hidden swords | D |
| And those who still assaulted though they crept | F2 |
| Into the inmost vantage points with craft | K2 |
| Fell blasted namelessly by this veiled flash | L2 |
| Even as they shouted out The place is ours | D |
| - | |
| So those two pilgrims dwelt there fortified | A |
| In that strong city men had thought so frail | M2 |
| They died and lived again Fiercest attack | N2 |
| Was as a perfumed breeze to them which drew | O2 |
| Their souls still closer unto God And there | P2 |
| Beauty and splendor bloomed untouched The stars | D |
| Spoke to them bidding them be of good cheer | Q2 |
| Though hostile hordes rushed over them in blood | R2 |
| And still the prayers of all that people rose | D |
| As incense mingled with music of their hearts | D |
| For Christ was with them angels were their aid | J2 |
| What though the enemy used their open gates | D |
| The children of the citadel conquered all | S2 |
| Their conquerors smiting them with the pure light | U |
| That shone in that strong city fortified | A |
