Whitsunday Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEG HIJI KLML NONO PIPI

Listen sweet Dove unto my songA
And spread thy golden wings in meB
Hatching my tender heart so longA
Till it get wing and fly away with theeB
-
Where is that fire which once descendedC
On thy Apostles thou didst thenD
Keep open house richly attendedC
Feasting all comers by twelve chosen menD
-
Such glorious gifts thou didst bestowE
That th'earth did like a heav'n appearF
The stars were coming down to knowE
If they might mend their wages and serve hereG
-
The sun which once did shine aloneH
Hung down his head and wisht for nightI
When he beheld twelve suns for oneJ
Going about the world and giving lightI
-
But since those pipes of gold which broughtK
That cordial water to our groundL
Were cut and martyr'd by the faultM
Of those who did themselves through their side woundL
-
Thou shutt'st the door and keep'st withinN
Scarce a good joy creeps through the chinkO
And if the braves of conqu'ring sinN
Did not excite thee we should wholly sinkO
-
Lord though we change thou art the sameP
The same sweet God of love and lightI
Restore this day for thy great nameP
Unto his ancient and miraculous rightI
