Oh all ye who pass by whose eyes and mindA
To worldly things are sharp but to me blindA
To me who took eyes that I might you findA
Was ever grief like mineB
-
The Princes of my people make a headC
Against their Maker they do wish me deadC
Who cannot wish except I give them breadC
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Without me each one who doth now me braveD
Had to this day been an Egyptian slaveD
They use that power against me which I gaveD
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Mine own Apostle who the bag did bearE
Though he had all I had did not forebearE
To sell me also and to put me thereE
Was ever grief like mineB
-
For thirty pence he did my death deviseF
Who at three hundred did the ointment prizeF
Not half so sweet as my sweet sacrificeG
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Therefore my soul melts and my heart's dear treasureH
Drops blood the only beads my words to measureH
O let this cup pass if it be thy pleasureH
Was ever grief like mineB
-
These drops being temper'd with a sinner's tearsI
A Balsam are for both the HemispheresI
Curing all wounds but mine all but my fearsI
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Yet my Disciples sleep I cannot gainJ
One hour of watching but their drowsy brainJ
Comforts not me and doth my doctrine stainJ
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Arise arise they come Look how they runK
Alas what haste they make to be undoneK
How with their lanterns do they seek the sunK
Was ever grief like mineB
-
With clubs and staves they seek me as a thiefL
Who am the way of truth the true reliefL
Most true to those who are my greatest griefL
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Judas dost thou betray me with a kissI
Canst thou find hell about my lips and missI
Of life just at the gates of life and blissI
Was ever grief like mineB
-
See they lay hold on me not with the handsI
Of faith but fury yet at their commandsI
I suffer binding who have loos'd their bandsI
Was ever grief like mineB
-
All my Disciples fly fear puts a barM
Betwixt my friends and me They leave the starM
That brought the wise men of the East from farM
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Then from one ruler to another boundN
They lead me urging that it was not soundN
What I taught Comments would the text confoundN
Was ever grief like mineB
-
The Priest and rulers all false witness seekO
'Gainst him who seeks not life but is the meekO
And ready Paschal Lamb of this great weekO
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Then they accuse me of great blasphemyP
That I did thrust into the DeityP
Who never thought that any robberyP
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Some said that I the Temple to the floorQ
In three days raz'd and raised as beforeQ
Why he that built the world can do much moreQ
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Then they condemn me all with that same breathR
Which I do give them daily unto deathR
Thus Adam my first breathing renderethR
Was ever grief like mineB
-
They bind and lead me unto Herod heP
Sends me to Pilate This makes them agreeP
But yet their friendship is my enmityP
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Herod and all his bands do set me lightS
Who teach all hands to war fingers to fightS
And only am the Lord of hosts and mightS
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Herod in judgement sits while I do standT
Examines me with a censorious handT
I him obey who all things else commandT
Was ever grief like mineB
-
The Jews accuse me with despitefulnessI
And vying malice with my gentlenessI
Pick quarrels with their only happinessI
Was ever grief like mineB
-
I answer nothing but with patience proveU
If stony hearts will melt with gentle loveV
But who does hawk at eagles with a doveV
Was ever grief like mineB
-
My silence rather doth augment their cryW
My dove doth back into my bosom flyW
Because the raging waters still are highW
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Hark how they cry aloud still 'CrucifyW
It is not fit he live a day ' they cryW
Who cannot live less than eternallyP
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Pilate a stranger holdeth off but theyR
Mine own dear people cry 'Away away '-
With noises confused frighting the dayR
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Yet still they shout and cry and stop their earsI
Putting my life among their sins and fearsI
And therefore wish my blood on them and theirsI
Was ever grief like mineB
-
See how spite cankers things These words arightR
Used and wished are the whole world's lightR
But honey is their gall brightness their nightR
Was ever grief like mineB
-
They choose a murderer and all agreeP
In him to do themselves a courtesyP
For it was their own cause who killed meP
Was ever grief like mineB
-
And a seditious murderer he wasI
But I the Prince of peace peace that doth passI
All understanding more than heav'n doth glassI
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Why Caesar is their only King not IW
He clave the stony rock when they were dryW
But surely not their hearts as I well tryW
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Ah how they scourge me yet my tendernessI
Doubles each lash and yet their bitternessI
Winds up my grief to a mysteriousnessI
Was ever grief like mineB
-
They buffet me and box me as they listR
Who grasp the earth and heaven with my fistR
And never yet whom I would punish miss'dR
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Behold they spit on me in scornful wiseI
Who by my spittle gave the blind man eyesI
Leaving his blindness to mine enemiesI
Was ever grief like mineB
-
My face they cover though it be divineB
As Moses' face was veiled so is mineB
Lest on their double dark souls either shineB
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Servants and abjects flout me they are wittyP
'Now prophesy who strikes thee ' is their dittyP
So they in me deny themselves all pityP
Was ever grief like mineB
-
And now I am deliver'd unto deathR
Which each one calls for so with utmost breathR
That he before me well nigh sufferethR
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Weep not dear friends since I for both have weptR
When all my tears were blood the while you sleptR
Your tears for your own fortunes should be keptR
Was ever grief like mineB
-
The soldiers lead me to the common hallX
There they deride me they abuse me allX
Yet for twelve heavn'ly legions I could callX
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Then with a scarlet robe they me arrayR
Which shows my blood to be the only wayR
And cordial left to repair man's decayR
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Then on my head a crown of thorns I wearE
For these are all the grapes SIon doth bearE
Though I my vine planted and watred thereE
Was ever grief like mineB
-
So sits the earth's great curse in Adam's fallX
Upon my head so I remove it allX
From th' earth unto my brows and bear the thrallX
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Then with the reed they gave to me beforeQ
They strike my head the rock from whence all storeQ
Of heavn'ly blessings issue evermoreQ
Was ever grief like mineB
-
They bow their knees to me and cry 'Hail king'R
What ever scoffs or scornfulness can bringR
I am the floor the sink where they it flingR
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Yet since man's sceptres are as frail as reedsI
And thorny all their crowns bloody their weedsI
I who am Truth turn into truth their deedsI
Was ever grief like mineB
-
The soldiers also spit upon that faceI
Which Angels did desire to have the graceI
And Prophets once to see but found no placeI
Was ever grief like mineB
-
Thus trimmed forth they bring me to the routR
Who 'Crucify him ' cry with one strong shoutR
God holds his peace at man and man cries outR
Was ever grief like mineB
-
