The Pulley Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABA CDCDC EDEDE FGHGFWhen God at first made man | A |
Having a glass of blessings standing by | B |
Let us said He pour on him all we can | A |
Let the world's riches which dispersed lie | B |
Contract into a span | A |
- | |
So strength first made a way | C |
Then beauty flowed then wisdom honour pleasure | D |
When almost all was out God made a stay | C |
Perceiving that alone of all His treasure | D |
Rest in the bottom lay | C |
- | |
For if I should said He | E |
Bestow this jewel also on my creature | D |
He would adore My gifts instead of Me | E |
And rest in Nature not the God of Nature | D |
So both should losers be | E |
- | |
Yet let him keep the rest | F |
But keep them with repining restlessness | G |
Let him be rich and weary that at least | H |
If goodness lead him not yet weariness | G |
May toss him to My breast | F |
