When I rov'd a young Highlander o'er the dark heathA
And climb'd thy steep summit oh Morven of snowB
To gaze on the torrent that thunder'd beneathA
Or the mist of the tempest that gather'd belowB
Untutor'd by science a stranger to fearC
And rude as the rocks where my infancy grewD
No feeling save one to my bosom was dearC
Need I say my sweet Mary 'twas centred in youD
-
Yet it could not be Love for I knew not the nameE
What passion can dwell in the heart of a childF
But still I perceive an emotion the sameE
As I felt when a boy on the crag cover'd wildF
One image alone on my bosom impress'dG
I lov'd my bleak regions nor panted for newD
And few were my wants for my wishes were bless'dG
And pure were my thoughts for my soul was with youD
-
I arose with the dawn with my dog as my guideH
From mountain to mountain I bounded alongI
I breasted the billows of Dee's rushing tideH
And heard at a distance the Highlander's songI
At eve on my heath cover'd couch of reposeJ
No dreams save of Mary were spread to my viewD
And warm to the skies my devotions aroseJ
For the first of my prayers was a blessing on youD
-
I left my bleak home and my visions are goneK
The mountains are vanish'd my youth is no moreL
As the last of my race I must wither aloneM
And delight but in days I have witness'd beforeL
Ah splendour has rais'd but embitter'd my lotN
More dear were the scenes which my infancy knewD
Though my hopes may have fail'd yet they are notN
forgotN
Though cold is my heart still it lingers with youD
-
When I see some dark hill point its crest to the skyO
I think of the rocks that o'ershadow ColbleenD
When I see the soft blue of a love speaking eyeO
I think of those eyes that endear'd the rude sceneD
When haply some light waving locks I beholdP
That faintly resemble my Mary's in hueD
I think on the long flowing ringlets of goldP
The locks that were sacred to beauty and youD
-
Yet the day may arrive when the mountains once moreL
Shall rise to my sight in their mantles of snowD
But while these soar above me unchang'd as beforeL
Will Mary be there to receive me ah noD
Adieu then ye hills where my childhood was bredQ
Thou sweet flowing Dee to thy waters adieuD
No home in the forest shall shelter my headQ
Ah Mary what home could be mine but with youD
