Well thou art happy and I feelA
That I should thus be happy tooB
For still my heart regards thy wealA
Warmly as it was wont to doB
-
Thy husband's blest and 'twill impartC
Some pangs to view his happier lotD
But let them pass Oh how my heartC
Would hate him if he loved thee notD
-
When late I saw thy favourite childE
I thought my jealous heart would breakF
But when the unconscious infant smil'dE
I kiss'd it for its mother's sakeF
-
I kiss'd it and repress'd my sighsG
Its father in its face to seeH
But then it had its mother's eyesG
And they were all to love and meH
-
Mary adieu I must awayI
While thou art blest I'll not repineJ
But near thee I can never stayI
My heart would soon again be thineJ
-
I deem'd that Time I deem'd that PrideK
Had quench'd at length my boyish flameL
Nor knew till seated by thy sideK
My heart in all save hope the sameL
-
Yet was I calm I knew the timeM
My breast would thrill before thy lookN
But now to tremble were a crimeM
We met and not a nerve was shookN
-
I saw thee gaze upon my faceO
Yet meet with no confusion thereP
One only feeling couldst thou traceO
The sullen calmness of despairP
-
Away away my early dreamQ
Remembrance never must awakeF
Oh where is Lethe's fabled streamQ
My foolish heart be still or breakF
