Tu semper amorisA
Sis memor et cari comitis ne abscedat imagoB
-
VAL FLAC 'Argonaut' ivC
-
-
Friend of my youth when young we rov'dD
Like striplings mutually belov'dD
With Friendship's purest glowE
The bliss which wing'd those rosy hoursA
Was such as Pleasure seldom showersA
On mortals here belowE
-
The recollection seems aloneF
Dearer than all the joys I've knownF
When distant far from youG
Though pain 'tis still a pleasing painH
To trace those days and hours againI
And sigh again adieuG
-
My pensive mem'ry lingers o'erJ
Those scenes to be enjoy'd no moreK
Those scenes regretted everJ
The measure of our youth is fullL
Life's evening dream is dark and dullM
And we may meet ah neverJ
-
As when one parent spring suppliesA
Two streams which from one fountain riseA
Together join'd in vainH
How soon diverging from their sourceA
Each murmuring seeks another courseA
Till mingled in the MainH
-
Our vital streams of weal or woeE
Though near alas distinctly flowE
Nor mingle as beforeK
Now swift or slow now black or clearN
Till Death's unfathom'd gulph appearN
And both shall quit the shoreK
-
Our souls my Friend which once suppliedD
One wish nor breathed a thought besideD
Now flow in different channelsA
Disdaining humbler rural sportsA
'Tis yours to mix in polish'd courtsA
And shine in Fashion's annalsA
-
'Tis mine to waste on love my timeO
Or vent my reveries in rhymeO
Without the aid of ReasonP
For Sense and Reason critics know itD
Have quitted every amorous PoetD
Nor left a thought to seize onQ
-
Poor LITTLE sweet melodious bardD
Of late esteem'd it monstrous hardD
That he who sang before allR
He who the lore of love expandedD
By dire Reviewers should be brandedD
As void of wit and moralM
-
And yet while Beauty's praise is thineS
Harmonious favourite of the NineS
Repine not at thy lotD
Thy soothing lays may still be readD
When Persecution's arm is deadD
And critics are forgotD
-
Still I must yield those worthies meritD
Who chasten with unsparing spiritD
Bad rhymes and those who write themT
And though myself may be the nextD
By critic sarcasm to be vextD
I really will not fight themT
-
Perhaps they would do quite as wellU
To break the rudely sounding shellU
Of such a young beginnerJ
He who offends at pert nineteenV
Ere thirty may become I weenV
A very harden'd sinnerJ
-
Now Clare I must return to youG
And sure apologies are dueG
Accept then my concessionV
In truth dear Clare in Fancy's flightD
I soar along from left to rightD
My Muse admires digressionV
-
I think I said 'twould be your fateD
To add one star to royal stateD
May regal smiles attend youG
And should a noble Monarch reignV
You will not seek his smiles in vainV
If worth can recommend youG
-
Yet since in danger courts aboundD
Where specious rivals glitter roundD
From snares may Saints preserve youG
And grant your love or friendship ne'erW
From any claim a kindred careW
But those who best deserve youG
-
Not for a moment may you strayX
From Truth's secure unerring wayX
May no delights decoyB
O'er roses may your footsteps moveC
Your smiles be ever smiles of loveC
Your tears be tears of joyB
-
Oh if you wish that happinessA
Your coming days and years may blessA
And virtues crown your browY
Be still as you were wont to beZ
Spotless as you've been known to meZ
Be still as you are nowY
-
And though some trifling share of praiseA
To cheer my last declining daysA
To me were doubly dearN
Whilst blessing your beloved nameA2
I'd waive at once a Poet's fameA2
To prove a Prophet hereB2
