You say you love and yet your eyeA
No symptom of that love conveysB
You say you love yet know not whyA
Your cheek no sign of love betraysB
-
Ah did that breast with ardour glowC
With me alone it joy could knowC
Or feel with me the listless woeC
Which racks my heart when far from theeD
-
Whene'er we meet my blushes riseE
And mantle through my purpled cheekF
But yet no blush to mine repliesE
Nor e'en your eyes your love bespeakF
-
Your voice alone declares your flameG
And though so sweet it breathes my nameG
Our passions still are not the sameG
Alas you cannot love like meD
-
For e'en your lip seems steep'd in snowC
And though so oft it meets my kissH
It burns with no responsive glowC
Nor melts like mine in dewy blissH
-
Ah what are words to love like mineI
Though uttered by a voice like thineI
I still in murmurs must repineI
And think that love can ne'er be trueJ
-
Which meets me with no joyous signI
Without a sigh which bids adieuJ
How different is my love from thineI
How keen my grief when leaving youJ
-
Your image fills my anxious breastK
Till day declines adown the WestK
And when at night I sink to restK
In dreams your fancied form I viewJ
-
'Tis then your breast no longer coldL
With equal ardour seems to burnI
While close your arms around me foldL
Your lips my kiss with warmth returnI
-
Ah would these joyous moments lastM
Vain HOPE the gay delusion's pastM
That voice ah no 'tis but the blastM
Which echoes through the neighbouring groveN
-
But when awake your lips I seekF
And clasp enraptur'd all your charmsO
So chill's the pressure of your cheekF
I fold a statue in my armsO
-
If thus when to my heart embrac'dP
No pleasure in your eyes is trac'dP
You may be prudent fair and chasteP
But ah my girl you do not loveQ
