Pignus Amoris Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

As by the fix'd decrees of HeavenA
'Tis vain to hope that Joy can lastB
The dearest boon that Life has givenA
To me is visions of the pastB
-
For these this toy of blushing hueC
I prize with zeal before unknownD
It tells me of a Friend I knewC
Who loved me for myself aloneD
-
It tells me what how few can sayE
Though all the social tie commendF
Recorded in my heart 'twill layE
It tells me mine was once a FriendF
-
Through many a weary day gone byG
With time the gift is dearer grownD
And still I view in Memory's eyeG
That teardrop sparkle through my ownD
-
And heartless Age perhaps will smileH
Or wonder whence those feelings sprungI
Yet let not sterner souls revileH
For Both were open Both were youngI
-
And Youth is sure the only timeJ
When Pleasure blends no base alloyK
When Life is blest without a crimeJ
And Innocence resides with JoyK
-
Let those reprove my feeble SoulL
Who laugh to scorn Affection's nameM
While these impose a harsh controulL
All will forgive who feel the sameM
-
Then still I wear my simple toyK
With pious care from wreck I'll save itN
And this will form a dear employK
For dear I was to him who gave itN
