Lachin Y Gair Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABACADAE FGFHIJIE AKAKAJAE LAMANNNN OMOMPNPN

Away ye gay landscapes ye gardens of rosesA
In you let the minions of luxury roveB
Restore me the rocks where the snow flake reposesA
Though still they are sacred to freedom and loveC
Yet Caledonia belov'd are thy mountainsA
Round their white summits though elements warD
Though cataracts foam 'stead of smooth flowing fountainsA
I sigh for the valley of dark Loch na GarrE
-
Ah there my young footsteps in infancy wander'dF
My cap was the bonnet my cloak was the plaidG
On chieftains long perish'd my memory ponder'dF
As daily I strode through the pine cover'd gladeH
I sought not my home till the day's dying gloryI
Gave place to the rays of the bright polar starJ
For fancy was cheer'd by traditional storyI
Disclos'd by the natives of dark Loch na GarrE
-
Shades of the dead have I not heard your voicesA
Rise on the night rolling breath of the galeK
Surely the soul of the hero rejoicesA
And rides on the wind o'er his own Highland valeK
Round Loch na Garr while the stormy mist gathersA
Winter presides in his cold icy carJ
Clouds there encircle the forms of my FathersA
They dwell in the tempests of dark Loch na GarrE
-
Ill starr'd though brave did no visions forebodingL
Tell you that fate had forsaken your causeA
Ah were you destined to die at CullodenM
Victory crown'd not your fall with applauseA
Still were you happy in death's earthy slumberN
You rest with your clan in the caves of BraemarN
The Pibroch resounds to the piper's loud numberN
Your deeds on the echoes of dark Loch na GarrN
-
Years have roll'd on Loch na Garr since I left youO
Years must elapse ere I tread you againM
Nature of verdure and flowers has bereft youO
Yet still are you dearer than Albion's plainM
England thy beauties are tame and domesticP
To one who has rov'd on the mountains afarN
Oh for the crags that are wild and majesticP
The steep frowning glories of dark Loch na GarrN
