It is the voice of years that are gone they roll before me withA
all their deedsB
-
OssianC
-
-
NEWSTEAD fast falling once resplendent domeD
Religion's shrine repentant HENRY'S prideE
Of Warriors Monks and Dames the cloister'd tombF
Whose pensive shades around thy ruins glideE
-
Hail to thy pile more honour'd in thy fallG
Than modern mansions in their pillar'd stateH
Proudly majestic frowns thy vaulted hallG
Scowling defiance on the blasts of fateH
-
No mail clad Serfs obedient to their LordI
In grim array the crimson cross demandJ
Or gay assemble round the festive boardI
Their chief's retainers an immortal bandJ
-
Else might inspiring Fancy's magic eyeK
Retrace their progress through the lapse of timeL
Marking each ardent youth ordain'd to dieK
A votive pilgrim in Judea's climeL
-
But not from thee dark pile departs the ChiefM
His feudal realm in other regions layN
In thee the wounded conscience courts reliefM
Retiring from the garish blaze of dayN
-
Yes in thy gloomy cells and shades profoundO
The monk abjur'd a world he ne'er could viewP
Or blood stain'd Guilt repenting solace foundO
Or Innocence from stern Oppression flewP
-
A Monarch bade thee from that wild ariseQ
Where Sherwood's outlaws once were wont to prowlR
And Superstition's crimes of various dyesQ
Sought shelter in the Priest's protecting cowlR
-
Where now the grass exhales a murky dewP
The humid pall of life extinguish'd clayN
In sainted fame the sacred Fathers grewP
Nor raised their pious voices but to prayN
-
Where now the bats their wavering wings extendS
Soon as the gloaming spreads her waning shadeT
The choir did oft their mingling vespers blendS
Or matin orisons to Mary paidT
-
Years roll on years to ages ages yieldU
Abbots to Abbots in a line succeedV
Religion's charter their protecting shieldU
Till royal sacrilege their doom decreedV
-
One holy HENRY rear'd the Gothic wallsW
And bade the pious inmates rest in peaceX
Another HENRY the kind gift recallsW
And bids devotion's hallow'd echoes ceaseX
-
Vain is each threat or supplicating prayerY
He drives them exiles from their blest abodeZ
To roam a dreary world in deep despairY
No friend no home no refuge but their GodA2
-
Hark how the hall resounding to the strainC
Shakes with the martial music's novel dinC
The heralds of a warrior's haughty reignC
High crested banners wave thy walls withinC
-
Of changing sentinels the distant humL
The mirth of feasts the clang of burnish'd armsB2
The braying trumpet and the hoarser drumL
Unite in concert with increas'd alarmsB2
-
An abbey once a regal fortress nowC
Encircled by insulting rebel powersC2
War's dread machines o'erhang thy threat'ning browC
And dart destruction in sulphureous showersC2
-
Ah vain defence the hostile traitor's siegeD2
Though oft repuls'd by guile o'ercomes the braveE2
His thronging foes oppress the faithful LiegeD2
Rebellion's reeking standards o'er him waveE2
-
Not unaveng'd the raging Baron yieldsF2
The blood of traitors smears the purple plainC
Unconquer'd still his falchion there he wieldsF2
And days of glory yet for him remainC
-
Still in that hour the warrior wish'd to strewP
Self gather'd laurels on a self sought graveE2
But Charles' protecting genius hither flewP
The monarch's friend the monarch's hope to saveE2
-
Trembling she snatch'd him from th' unequal strifeG2
In other fields the torrent to repelH2
For nobler combats here reserv'd his lifeG2
To lead the band where godlike FALKLAND fellH2
-
From thee poor pile to lawless plunder givenC
While dying groans their painful requiem soundO
Far different incense now ascends to HeavenC
Such victims wallow on the gory groundO
-
There many a pale and ruthless Robber's corseI2
Noisome and ghast defiles thy sacred sodA2
O'er mingling man and horse commix'd with horseI2
Corruption's heap the savage spoilers trodA2
-
Graves long with rank and sighing weeds o'erspreadA2
Ransack'd resign perforce their mortal mouldA2
From ruffian fangs escape not e'en the deadA2
Racked from repose in search for buried goldA2
-
Hush'd is the harp unstrung the warlike lyreJ2
The minstrel's palsied hand reclines in deathK2
No more he strikes the quivering chords with fireL2
Or sings the glories of the martial wreathM2
-
At length the sated murderers gorged with preyN
Retire the clamour of the fight is o'erL2
Silence again resumes her awful swayN
And sable Horror guards the massy doorN2
-
Here Desolation holds her dreary courtA2
What satellites declare her dismal reignC
Shrieking their dirge ill omen'd birds resortA2
To flit their vigils in the hoary faneC
-
Soon a new Morn's restoring beams dispelH2
The clouds of Anarchy from Britain's skiesQ
The fierce Usurper seeks his native hellH2
And Nature triumphs as the Tyrant diesQ
-
With storms she welcomes his expiring groansO2
Whirlwinds responsive greet his labouring breathK2
Earth shudders as her caves receive his bonesO2
Loathing the offering of so dark a deathK2
-
The legal Ruler now resumes the helmL
He guides through gentle seas the prow of stateA2
Hope cheers with wonted smiles the peaceful realmL
And heals the bleeding wounds of wearied HateA2
-
The gloomy tenants Newstead of thy cellsP2
Howling resign their violated nestA2
Again the Master on his tenure dwellsP2
Enjoy'd from absence with enraptured zestA2
-
Vassals within thy hospitable paleQ2
Loudly carousing bless their Lord's returnC
Culture again adorns the gladdening valeQ2
And matrons once lamenting cease to mournC
-
A thousand songs on tuneful echo floatA2
Unwonted foliage mantles o'er the treesR2
And hark the horns proclaim a mellow noteA2
The hunters' cry hangs lengthening on the breezeR2
-
Beneath their coursers' hoofs the valleys shakeS2
What fears what anxious hopes attend the chaseT2
The dying stag seeks refuge in the lakeS2
Exulting shouts announce the finish'd raceT2
-
Ah happy days too happy to endureU2
Such simple sports our plain forefathers knewP
No splendid vices glitter'd to allureU2
Their joys were many as their cares were fewP
-
From these descending Sons to Sires succeedA2
Time steals along and Death uprears his dartA2
Another Chief impels the foaming steedA2
Another Crowd pursue the panting hartA2
-
Newstead what saddening change of scene is thineC
Thy yawning arch betokens slow decayN
The last and youngest of a noble lineC
Now holds thy mouldering turrets in his swayN
-
Deserted now he scans thy gray worn towersC2
Thy vaults where dead of feudal ages sleepV2
Thy cloisters pervious to the wintry showersC2
These these he views and views them but to weepV2
-
Yet are his tears no emblem of regretA2
Cherish'd Affection only bids them flowW2
Pride Hope and Love forbid him to forgetA2
But warm his bosom with impassion'd glowW2
-
Yet he prefers thee to the gilded domesX2
Or gewgaw grottos of the vainly greatA2
Yet lingers 'mid thy damp and mossy tombsY2
Nor breathes a murmur 'gainst the will of FateA2
-
Haply thy sun emerging yet may shineC
Thee to irradiate with meridian rayN
Hours splendid as the past may still be thineC
And bless thy future as thy former dayN
