Near this spotA
Are deposited the RemainsB
Of oneC
Who possessed BeautyD
Without VanityD
Strength without InsolenceE
Courage without FerocityD
And all the Virtues of ManF
Without his VicesG
-
The Price which would be unmeaning flatteryD
If inscribed over Human AshesG
Is but a just tribute to the Memory ofH
'Boatswain ' a DogI
Who was born at NewfoundlandJ
MayK
And died in Newstead AbbeyD
NovL
-
When some proud son of man returns to earthM
Unknown by glory but upheld by birthM
The sculptor's art exhausts the pomp of woeN
And stories urns record that rests belowN
When all is done upon the tomb is seenO
Not what he was but what he should have beenP
But the poor dog in life the firmest friendQ
The first to welcome foremost to defendQ
Whose honest heart is still his master's ownR
Who labors fights lives breathes for him aloneR
Unhonored falls unnoticed all his worthM
Denied in heaven the soul he held on earthM
While man vain insect hopes to be forgivenC
And claims himself a sole exclusive heavenC
-
Oh man thou feeble tenant of an hourS
Debased by slavery or corrupt by powerS
Who knows thee well must quit thee with disgustT
Degraded mass of animated dustT
Thy love is lust thy friendship all a cheatU
Thy smiles hypocrisy thy words deceitU
By nature vile ennoble but by nameV
Each kindred brute might bid thee blush for shameV
Ye who perchance behold this simple urnW
Pass on it honors none you wish to mournX
To mark a friend's remains these stones ariseY
I never knew but one and here he liesY
