'It is the voice of years that are goneA
they roll before me with all their deeds ' OSSIANA
-
-
Newstead fast falling once resplendent domeB
Religion's shrine repentant HENRY's prideC
Of warriors monks and dames the cloister'd tombD
Whose pensive shades around thy ruins glideC
Hail to thy pile more honour'd in thy fallE
Than modern mansions in their pillar'd stateF
Proudly majestic frowns thy vaulted hallE
Scowling defiance on the blasts of fateF
-
No mail clad serfs obedient to their lordG
In grim array the crimson cross demandH
Or gay assemble round the festive boardG
Their chief's retainers an immortal bandH
-
Else might inspiting Fancy's magic eyeI
Retrace their progress through the lapse of timeJ
Marking each ardent youth ordaln'd to dieI
A votive pilgrim in Judea's climeJ
-
But not from thee dark pile departs the chiefK
His feudal realm in other regions layL
In thee the wounded conscience courts reliefK
Retiring from the garish blare of dayL
-
Yes in thy gloomy cells and shades profoundM
The monk abjured a world he ne'er could viewN
Or blood stain'd guilt repenting solace foundM
Or innocence from stern oppression flewN
-
A monarch bade thee from that wild ariseO
Where Sherwood's outlaws once were wont to prowlP
And Superstition's crimes of various dyesO
Sought shelter in the priest's protecting cowlP
-
Where now the grass exhales a murky dewN
The humid pail of life extinguish'd clayL
In sainted fame the sacred fathers grewN
Nor raised their pious voices but to prayL
-
Where now the bats their wavering wings extendQ
Soon as the gloaming spreads her waning shadeR
The choir did oft their mingling vespers blendQ
Or matin orisons to Mary paldQ
-
Years roll on years to ages ages yieldQ
Abbots to abbots in a line succeedQ
Religion's charter their protecting shieldQ
Till royal sacrilege their doom decreedQ
One holy HENRY rear'd the Gothic wallsS
And bade the pious inmates rest in peaceT
Another HENRY the kind gift recallsS
And bids devotion's hallow'd echos ceaseT
-
Vain is each threat or supplicating prayerU
He drives them exiles from their blest abodeQ
To roam a dreary world in deep despairU
No friend no home no refuge but their GodQ
-
Hark how the hall resounding to the strainA
Shakes with the martial music's novel dinA
The heralds of a warrior's haughty reignA
High crested banners wave thy wails withinA
-
Of changing sentinels the distant humJ
The mirth of feasts the clang of burnish'd armsV
The braying trumpet and the hoarser drumJ
Unite in concert with increased alarmsV
-
An abbey once a regal fortress nowA
Encircled by insulting rebel powersW
War's dread machines o'erhang thy threat'ning browA
And dart destruction in sulphureous showersW
-
Ah vain defence the hostile traitor's siegeX
Though oft repulsed by guile o'er comes the braveY
His thronging foes oppress the faithful liegeX
Rebellion's reeking standards o'er him waveY
-
Not unavenged the raging baron yieldsZ
The blood of traitors smears the purple plainA
Unconqu'r'd still his falchion there he wieldsZ
And days of glory yet for him remainA
-
Still in that hour the warrior wish'd to strewN
Self gather'd laurel on a self sought graveY
But Charles' protecting genius hither flewN
The monarch's friend the monarch's hope to saveY
-
Trembling she snatch'd him ftom th' unequal strifeA2
In other fields the torrent to repelB2
For nobler combats here reservedhis lifeA2
To lead the hand where godlike FALKLAND fellB2
From thee poor pile to lawless plunder givenA
While dying groans their painful requiem soundQ
Far different incense now ascends to heavenA
Such victims wallow on the gory groundQ
-
There many a pale and ruthless robber's corseC2
Noisome and ghast defiles thy sacred sodQ
O'er mingling man and horse commix'd with horseC2
Corruption's heap the savage spoilers trodQ
-
Graves long with rank and sighing weeds o'erspreadQ
Ransack'd resign perforce their mortal mouldQ
From ruffian fangs escape not e'en the deadQ
Raked from repose in search of buried goldQ
-
Hush'd is the harp unstrung the warlike lyre'N
The minstrel's palsied hand reclines in deathD2
No more he strikes the quivering chords with fireN
Or sings the glories of the martial wreathE2
-
At length the sated murderers gorged with preyN
Retire the clamour of the fight is o'erN
Silence again resumes her awful swayN
And sable Horror guards the massy doorN
-
Here Desolation holds her dreary courtQ
What satellites declare her dismal reignA
Shrieking their dirge ill omen'd birds resortQ
To flit their vigils in the hoary faneA
-
Soon a new morn's restoring beams dispelB2
The clouds of anarchy from Britain's skiesO
The fierce usurper seeks his native hellB2
And Nature triumphs as the tyrant diesO
-
With storms she welcomes his expiring groansF2
Whirlwinds responsive greet his labouring breathD2
Earth shudders as her caves receive his bonesF2
Loathing the offering of so dark a deathD2
-
The legal ruler now resumes the helmJ
He guides through gentle seas the prow of stateQ
Hope cheers with wonted smiles the peaceful realmJ
And heals the bleeding wounds of wearied hateQ
-
The gloomy tenants Newstead of thy cellsG2
Howling resign their violated nestQ
Again the master on his tenure dwellsG2
Enjoy'd from absence with enraptured zestQ
-
Vassals within thy hospitable paleH2
Loudly carousing bless their lord's returnA
Culture again adorns the gladdening valeH2
And matrons once lamenting cease to mournA
-
A thousand songs on tuneful echo floatQ
Unwonted foliage mantles o'er the treesI2
And hark the horns proclalm a mellow noteQ
The hunters' cry hangs lengthening on the breezeI2
-
Beneath their coursers' hoofs the valleys shakeJ2
What fears what anxious hopes attend the chaseK2
The dying stag seeks refuge in the lakeJ2
Exulting shouts announce the finish'd raceK2
-
Ah happy days too happy to endureN
Such simple sports our plain forefathers knewN
No splendid vices glitter'd to allureN
Their joys were many as their cares were fewN
-
From these descending sons to sires succeedQ
Time steals along and Death uprears the dartQ
Another chief impels the foaming steedQ
Another crowd pursue the panting hartQ
-
Newstead what saddening change of scene is thineA
Thy yawning arch betokens slow decayN
The last and youngest of a noble lineA
Now holds thy mouldering turrets in his swayN
-
Deserted now he scans thy gray worn towersW
Thy vaults where dead of feudal ages sleepL2
Thy cloisters pervious to the wintry showersW
These these he views and views them but to weepL2
-
Yet are his tears no emblem of regretQ
Cherish'd affection only bids them flowM2
Pride hope and love forbid him to forgetQ
But warm his bosom with irnpassion'd glowM2
-
Yet he prefers thee to the gilded domesN2
Or gewgaw grottos of the vainly greatQ
Yet lingers 'mid thy damp and mossy tombsO2
Nor breathes a murmur 'gainst the will of fateQ
-
Haply thy sun emerging yet may shineA
Thee to irradiate with meridian rayN
Hours splendid as the past may still be thineA
And bless thy future as thy former dayN
