The Splendour And The Curse Of Song Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABBCCDEDEECC FAGAHCC IJIJJCC KLKLLCC

Methought the unknown God we seek in vainA
Grew weary of the evil He had wroughtB
The piteous litanies of human painA
Till here and there some lonely souls He soughtB
To bear the message of Immortal ThoughtB
And sent them forth to wander midst the throngC
Crowned with the splendour and the curse of SongC
But that which still was kindred to the starsD
Fought with the flesh and moaned within its cellE
And beat its wings against its prison barsD
Thus soaring oft to heights sublime they fellE
Dragged by the flesh into the gulfs of hellE
Till all their days were as a tumult longC
Between the splendour and the curse of SongC
-
Yet often mid the fever of distressF
Some singer s lips would chant so sweet a strainA
That storm tossed souls forgot their wearinessG
And comfort crept about the bed of painA
And men took heart and dreamt of heaven againH
And to the weak came hope and courage strongC
Born of the beauty and the balm of SongC
-
But Life was bitter to the lips that sungI
And heavier on those souls the curse did growJ
Who strove to speak to men an unknown tongueI
And mournfully their hearts did weigh and knowJ
The measure of the whole world s cruel woeJ
And wearily they fared Time s path alongC
Vexed by the splendour and the curse of SongC
-
Theirs was the homeless hunger of the heartK
Immortal thought within a mortal breastL
Listless they wandered through the crowded martK
Who to a careless world had given their bestL
And when Death lulled them with his wings to restL
What reeked they where they slumbered calm and strongC
Crowned with the splendour of Immortal SongC
