Seddon Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ KLKL| When from his place a forest monarch falls | A |
| A thunder shakes the leafy leagues across | B |
| Reverberating to its utmost walls | A |
| So through an Empire rings this sound of loss | B |
| Still as of old the kingless forest aisles | C |
| We see but not the strength that was their fame | D |
| So at Death s voice far from his kingless aisles | C |
| The last Great Tribune answers to his name | D |
| - | |
| Nature that builds great minds for mighty tasks | E |
| Sculptured his frame to match the soul within | F |
| Taught him how wisdom wields the power it asks | E |
| For each new conquest set him more to win | F |
| - | |
| Rough hewn was he for power a massive mould | G |
| Broad brained far sighted honourable free | H |
| From narrowing envy with a heart of gold | G |
| As wide and deep and dominant as the sea | H |
| - | |
| He passes but his memory is power | I |
| Behind him lives the good that none may stay | J |
| His name remains a beacon light a tower | I |
| By which all feebler hearts may guide their way | J |
| - | |
| Come let us follow him with reverent feet | K |
| With fern and rata twine the wattle fair | L |
| Tread soft a mighty heart has ceased to beat | K |
| And one of Nature s kings is sleeping there | L |
