When first the Gods whose Empire is eternalA
In Time s deep chalice poured Life s sacred wineB
Flashed all the crystal cup with fire supernalA
Then said they Shall the mortal be divineB
Shall man usurp the ways the Gods have trodC
Who quaffs this cup himself should be a GodC
So tempered they the measure of their givingD
And mingled germs of evil with the goodE
So mixed they death with the fierce fire of livingD
And anguish with the joy of motherhoodE
And with the balm of peace a weird unrestF
And an unformed desire in every breastF
-
So set they discord in the sweetest singingD
And a sharp thorn about the fairest roseG
And doubt around the cross where faith was clingingD
And fear to haunt the regions of reposeG
And dimmed men s eyes so that they should not seeH
Like Gods the vistas of futurityF
-
They coloured failure with hope s rainbow splendourI
And tinged the hour of triumph with regretF
Made strength subservient to the weak and tenderI
And wisdom folly caught in beauty s netF
Till unto man life s wine was bitter sweetF
Betwixt the perfect and the incompleteF
-
Then said the Gods the Gods who live for everI
Let us shower gifts upon the soul of manJ
That he may catch a glimpse of our endeavourI
And yet not solve the Universal PlanJ
For though Life s deepest truths be near to findF
Man shall behold and see not being blindF
-
Thus to the blessing of the Gods descendingD
The universal curse and shadow clungK
The mystic evil with the glory blendingD
That mars the aeons since the world was youngK
For upon all whom the High Gods had blestF
There fell the quenchless fever of unrestF
-
Then rose a ferment and an exaltationJ
And all men s souls were thrilled and stirred withinJ
There came a prophet unto every nationJ
To teach new doctrines of the source of sinJ
And men arose as Gods and creeds beganJ
To preach th Eternal Godhead one with manJ
-
And ever thro all lands with waves sonorousL
Rolled on from age to age the stream of songM
Which made low valleys sweet with rhythmic chorusL
And shook the rock bound hills with music strongM
And flushed and fired men s souls like fumes of wineJ
Yet was but human not a song divineJ
-
For lo thro all that seemeth inspirationJ
Enters the curse that blurs created thingsN
Beyond the barriers of our limitationJ
Not ever yet a soul has spread its wingsN
Nor has been yet nor ever shall there beH
A perfect song a perfect harmonyH
-
O music of the wind and of the oceanJ
O Power that sways the glory of the spheresO
O aching hearts that vibrate with emotionJ
O mystery of Life O human tearsP
What light shall lead us thro the wildernessL
From out the Egypt of our bitternessL
-
O Poets round whose souls since the beginningD
Strange echoes tremble and wild visions throngM
Ye all have heard the sweetness of the singingD
But no man knows the meaning of the songM
That lifts our frail souls heavenwards with its strainJ
Then flings us bleeding to the earth againJ
-
Brothers my soul has quickened with your gladnessL
I too have sorrowed over human woeQ
I too have felt the terror and the madnessL
That all who seek for truth and light must knowQ
My faint heart falters in the bitter strifeR
The labyrinths of the mysteries of LifeR
-
What hope what comfort in our desolationJ
What ray to pierce the blackness of our nightF
To weary hearts what balm of consolationJ
That earth is finite heaven is infiniteF
What tho the hand of Faith still points the wayS
The voice of Reason ever brings delayS
-
Nay tho Life s secret be beyond our dreamingD
And all the creeds that sway the world untrueI
A radiance creeps aslant the shadows gleamingD
Whose golden arrows pierce the darkness throI
If all our errors hold one germ of rightF
The paths that lead to truth are infiniteF
-
Throughout all nature and throughout creationJ
A Power Supreme its manual sign has writF
In pain and stress thro aeons of gradationJ
Shall the weak soul of man decipher itF
For since the spirit is above the clayS
Man shall not know th Eternal in a dayS
-
Yet tho we know not their immortal placesL
And tho their footsteps are not heard of manJ
And tho with mystery they veil their facesL
And bid us search the Universal PlanJ
And tho to all there cometh with Life s breathT
Suffering and doubt and weariness and deathT
-
I sing Eternal Hope and Strong EndeavourI
Truth shining down a myriad aisles of thoughtF
I sing the deathless souls of men for everI
By strange wild paths to one vast triumph broughtF
The God in Man the hunger of the soulA
One with the Wisdom that inspires the WholeA
