Rhyme Scheme: AAABB CDCD EFEF GFGF BHBH IJIJ

The following Ballad is merely a versification of one of theA
many feats of Waldemar the famed phantom hunter of theA
North an account of whom and of Palnatoka and Groon theA
Jutt both spectres of a similar character may be found inB
Thiele's Danske FolkesagnB
-
-
Late at eve they were toiling on Harribee bankC
For in harvest men ne'er should be idleD
Towards them rode Waldemar meagre and lankC
And he linger'd and drew up his bridleD
-
Success to your labour and have ye to nightE
Seen any thing pass ye while reapingF
Yes yes said a peasant I saw something whiteE
Just now through the corn stubble creepingF
-
Which way did it go Why methought to the beachG
Then off went Waldemar boundingF
A few minutes after they heard a faint screechG
And the horn of the hunter resoundingF
-
Then back came he laughing in horrible toneB
And the blood in their veins ran the colderH
When they saw that a fresh slaughter'd mermaid was thrownB
Athwart his proud barb's dappled shoulderH
-
Said he I have chas'd her for seven score yearsI
As she landed to drink at the fountainsJ
No more did he deign to their terrified earsI
But gallop'd away to the mountainsJ
