Do thou dear Mother contrive amainA
How Marsk Stig's daughter I may gainA
-
She made him of water a noble steedB
Whose trappings were form'd from rush and reedB
-
To a young knight chang'd she then her sonA
To Mary's church at full speed he's goneA
-
His foaming horse to the gate he boundC
And pac'd the church full three times roundC
-
When in he walk'd with his plume on highD
The dead men gave from their tombs a sighD
-
The priest heard that and he clos'd his bookE
Methinks yon knight has a strange wild lookE
-
Then laugh'd the maiden beneath her sleeveF
If he were my husband I should not grieveF
-
He stepp'd over benches one and twoG
O Marsk Stig's daughter I doat on youG
-
He stepp'd over benches two and threeH
O Marsk Stig's daughter come home with meH
-
Then said the maid without more adoG
Here take my troth I will go with youG
-
They went from the church a bridal trainA
And danc'd so gaily across the plainA
-
They danc'd till they came to the strand and thenA
They were forsaken by maids and menA
-
Now Marsk Stig's daughter sit down and restI
To build a boat I will do my bestI
-
He built a boat of the whitest sandJ
And away they went from the smiling landJ
-
But when they had cross'd the ninth green waveK
Down sunk the boat to the ocean caveK
-
I caution ye maids as well as I canA
Ne'er give your troth to an unknown manA
