The silken sail which caught the summer breezeA
Drove the light vessel through the azure seasA
Upon the lofty deck Dame Sigrid layB
And watch'd the setting of the orb of dayB
Then all at once the smiling sky grew darkC
The breakers rav'd and sinking seem'd the barkC
The wild Death raven perch'd upon the mastD
Scream'd 'mid the tumult and awoke the blastD
-
Dame Sigrid saw the demon bird on highE
And tear drops started in her beauteous eyeE
Her cheeks which late like blushing roses bloom'dF
Had now the pallid hue of fear assum'dF
O wild death raven calm thy frightful rageG
Nor war with one who warfare cannot wageG
Tame yonder billows make them cease to roarH
And I will give thee pounds of golden oreH
-
With gold thou must not hope to pay the braveI
For gold I will not calm a single waveI
For gold I will not hush the stormy airJ
And yet my heart is mov'd by thy despairJ
Give me the treasure hid beneath thy beltK
And straight yon clouds in harmless rain shall meltK
And down I'll thunder with my claws of steelL
Upon the merman clinging to your keelL
-
What I conceal'd beneath my girdle bearJ
Is thine irrevocably thine I swearJ
Thou hast refus'd a great and noble preyB
To get possession of my closet keyM
Lo here it is and when within thy mawN
May'st thou much comfort from the morsel drawN
The polish'd steel upon the deck she castD
And off the raven flutter'd from the mastD
-
Then down at once he plung'd amid the mainO
And clove the merman's frightful head in twainO
The foam clad billows to repose he broughtP
And tam'd the tempest with the speed of thoughtP
Then with a thrice repeated demon cryE
He soar'd aloft and vanish'd in the skyE
A soft wind blew the ship towards the landQ
And soon Dame Sigrid reach'd the wish'd for strandQ
-
Once late at eve she play'd upon her harpR
Close by the lake where slowly swam the carpR
And as the moon beam down upon her shoneS
She thought of Norway and its pine woods loneS
Yet love I Denmark said she and the DanesT
For o'er them Alf my mighty husband reignsT
Then 'neath her girdle something mov'd and yearn'dU
And into terror all her bliss was turn'dU
-
Ah now I know thy meaning cruel birdV
Long sat she then and neither spoke nor stirr'dV
Faint through the mist which rob'd the sky in grayB
The pale stars glimmer'd from the milky wayB
Ah now I know thy meaning cruel birdV
She strove in vain to breathe another wordV
Above her head its leaf the aspen shookW
Moist as her cheek and pallid as her lookW
-
Full five months pass'd ere she 'mid night and gloomX
Brought forth with pain an infant from her wombX
They baptiz'd it at midnight's murky hourY
Lest it should fall within the demon's powerY
It was a boy more lovely than the mornZ
Yet Sigrid's heart with bitter care was tornZ
Deep in a grot through which a brook did flowA2
With crystal drops they sprinkled Harrald's browB2
-
He grew and grew till upon Danish groundC2
No youth to match the stripling could be foundC2
He was at once so graceful and so strongD2
His look was fire and his speech was songD2
When yet a child he tam'd the battle steedE2
And only thought of war and daring deedE2
But yet Queen Sigrid nurs'd prophetic fearsF2
And when she view'd him always swam in tearsG2
-
One evening late she lay upon her bedH2
King Alf her noble spouse was long since deadH2
She felt so languid and her aching breastI2
With more than usual sorrow was oppress'dI2
Ah then she heard a sudden sound that thrill'dJ2
Her every nerve and life's warm current chill'dJ2
The bird of death had through the casement flownS
And thus he scream'd to her in frightful toneS
-
The wealthy bird came toweringK2
Came scoweringK2
O'er hill and streamL2
'Look here look here thou needy birdV
How gay my feathers gleam '-
-
The needy bird came flutteringK2
Came mutteringK2
And sadly sangK2
'Look here look here thou wealthy birdV
How loose my feathers hang '-
-
Remember Queen the stormy dayB
When cast awayB
Thou wast so nighE
Thou wast the needy bird that dayB
And unto me didst cryE
-
Death raven now comes toweringK2
Comes scoweringK2
O'er hill and streamL2
But when wilt thou Dame Sigrid fairJ
Thy plighted word redeemL2
-
A hollow moan from Sigrid's bosom cameM2
While he survey'd her with his eye of flameM2
Fly said she demon monster get thee henceN2
My humble pray'r shall be my son's defenceN2
She cross'd herself and then the fiend flew outO2
But first contemptuously he danc'd aboutO2
And sang No pray'r shall save him from my rageG
In Christian blood my thirst I will assuageG
-
Young Harrald seiz'd his scarlet cap and criedP2
I'll probe the grief my mother fain would hideP2
Then rushing into her apartment fairJ
O mother said he wherefore sitt'st thou thereJ
Far from thy family at dead of nightQ2
With lips so mute and cheeks so ghastly whiteQ2
Tell me what lies so heavy at thy heartR2
Grief when confided loses half its smartR2
-
O Harrald sigh'd she yielding to his pray'rS2
Creatures are swarming in the earth and airJ
Who wild with wickedness and hot with wrathT2
Wage war on those who follow virtue's pathT2
One of those fiends is on the watch for theeM
Arm'd with a promise wrung by him from meM
His blood shot eyes in narrow sockets rollU2
And every night he leaves his mirksome holeU2
-
He was a kind of God in former daysV2
Kings worshipp'd him and minstrels sang his praiseV2
But when Christ's doctrine through the dark North flam'dW2
His and all evil spirits' might was tam'dW2
He now is but a raven yet is stillX2
Full strong enough to work on thee his willX2
Lost is the wretch who in his power fallsY2
Vainly he shrieks in vain for mercy callsY2
-
She whisper'd to him then with bloodless lipZ2
What had befallen her on board the shipZ2
But youthful Harrald listen'd undismay'dW2
And merely gripp'd the handle of his bladeW2
My son she murmur'd when her tale was toldW2
Fear withers me but thou look'st blythe and boldW2
The youth uplifted then his sparkling eyeE
And said whilst gazing on the moon lit skyE
-
Once my dear mother at the close of dayW2
Among tall flowers in the grove I layW2
Soft sang the linnets from a thousand treesA
And sweetly lull'd I slumber'd by degreesA
Then heaven's curtain was methought undrawnS
And clad in hues that deck the brow of mornS
An angel slowly sank towards the earthA3
Which seem'd to hail him with a smile of mirthA3
-
He rais'd his hand and bade me fix my eyeE
Upon a chain which hanging from the skyE
Embrac'd the world and stretching high and lowA2
Clink'd as it mov'd the notes of joy and woA2
The links that came in sight were purpled o'erY
Full frequently with what seem'd human goreH
Of various metals made it clasp'd the mouldW2
Steel clung to silver iron clung to goldW2
-
Then said the angel with majestic airJ
'The chain of destiny thou seest thereJ
Accept whate'er it gives and murmur notW2
For hard necessity has cast each lot '-
He vanish'd I awoke with sudden startW2
But that strange dream was graven on my heartW2
I go wherever fate shall please to callB3
Without God's leave no fly to earth can fallB3
-
It thunders and from midnight's mirky cloudW2
Comes peal on peal reverberating loudW2
The froth clad breakers cast with sullen roarH
A Scottish bark upon the whiten'd shoreH
Straight to the royal palace hasten thenS
A lovely maid and thirty sea worn menS
Minona Scotland's princess Scotland's boastW2
The storm has driven to the Danish coastW2
-
Oft while the train hew timber in the grovesC3
Minona arm in arm with Harrald rovesC3
Warm from his lip the words of passion flowA2
Pure in her eyes the flames of passion glowA2
One summer eve upon a mossy bankK2
Mouth join'd to mouth and breast to breast they sankK2
The moon arose in haste to see their loveD3
And wild birds carroll'd from the boughs aboveD3
-
But now the ship which seem'd of late a wreckK2
Floats with a mast set proudly on her deckK2
Minona kisses Harrald's blooming faceC3
Whilst he attends her to the parting placeC3
His bold young heart beats high against his sideW2
She sail'd away and like one petrifiedW2
Full long he stood upon the shore to viewE3
The smooth keel slipping through the waters blueE3
-
Months pass and Sigrid's sorrow disappearsC3
The wild death raven's might no more she fearsC3
A gentle red bedecks her cheek againS
And briny drops her eye no longer stainS
My Harrald stalks in manly size and strengthF3
Swart bird of darkness I rejoice at lengthF3
If thy curst claw could hurt my gallant sonS
Long long ere this the deed would have been doneS
-
But Harrald look'd so moody and forlornS
And thus his mother he address'd one mornS
Minona's face is equall'd by her mindW2
Methinks she calls me from her hills of windW2
Give me a ship with men and gold at needW2
And let me to her father's kingdom speedW2
I'll soon return and back across the tideW2
Bring thee a daughter and myself a brideW2
-
Dame Sigrid promis'd him an answer soonS
And went that night when risen was the moonS
Deep through the black recesses of the woodW2
To where old Bruno's shelter'd cabin stoodW2
She enter'd there he sat behind his boardW2
His woollen vestment girded by a cordW2
The little lamp which hung from overheadW2
Gleam'd on the Bible leaves before him spreadW2
-
Hail to thee Father man of hoary ageG
Thy Queen demands from thee thy counsel sageG
Young Harrald to a distant land will goA2
And I his destiny would gladly knowA2
Thou read'st the stars O do the stars portendW2
That he shall come to an untimely endW2
Take from his mother's heart this one last careJ
And she will always name thee in her pray'rS2
-
The hermit rising from his lonely nookK2
With naked head and coldly placid lookK2
Went out and gaz'd intently on the skyE
Whose lights were letters to his ancient eyeE
The stars said he in friendly order standW2
One only flashes like an angry brandW2
Thy Harrald gentle Queen will not be slainS
Upon the Earth nor yet upon the MainS
-
While thus the seer prophetically spokeK2
A flush of joy o'er Sigrid's features brokeK2
He'll not be slain on ocean or on landW2
She said and kiss'd the hermit's wrinkled handW2
Why then I'm happy and my son is freeM
To mount his bark and gallop through the seaM
Upon the grey stone he will sit as kingK2
When in the grave my bones are moulderingK2
-
The painted galley floats now in the creekK2
Flags at her mast and garlands at her beakK2
High on the yard arm hoisted is the sailG3
Half spread it flutters in the evening galeG3
The night before he goes young Harrald stray'dW2
Into the wood where first he saw his maidW2
Burning impatience fever'd all his bloodW2
He wish'd for wings to bear him o'er the floodW2
-
Then sigh'd the wind among the bushy groundsC3
Far in the distance rose the yell of houndsC3
The flame wisps starting from the sedge and grassC3
Hung 'mid the vapours over the morassC3
Up to him came a beldame wildly drestW2
Bearing a closely folded feather vestW2
She smil'd upon him with her cheeks so wanS
Gave him the robe and was already goneS
-
Young Harrald though astonish'd has no fearsC3
The mighty garment in his hand he rearsC3
Of wond'rous lovely feathers it was madeW2
Which once the roc and ostrich had array'dW2
He wishes much to veil in it his formH3
And speed as rapidly as speeds the stormH3
He puts it on then seeks the open plainS
Takes a short flight and flutters back againS
-
Courage he cried I will no longer stayW2
Scotland shall see me ere the break of dayW2
Then like a dragon in the air he soarsC3
Startled from slumber in his wake it roarsC3
His wings across the ocean take their flightW2
Groves cities hills have vanish'd from his sightW2
See there he goes lone rider of the skyK2
Miles underneath him black the billows lieK2
-
He hears a clapping on the midnight windW2
Speed Harrald speed the raven is behindW2
Flames from his swarthy rolling eye are castW2
Ha Harrald scream'd he have we met at lastW2
For the first time the youth felt terror's forceC3
Pale grew his cheek as that of clammy corseC3
Chill was his blood his nervous arm was faintW2
While thus he stammer'd forth his lowly plaintW2
-
I see it is in vain to strive with fateW2
Thank God my soul is far above thy hateW2
But ere my mortal part thou dost destroyI3
Let me one moment of sweet bliss enjoyI3
The fair unmatch'd Minona is my loveD3
For her I travell'd fool like here aboveD3
Let me fly to her with my last farewellJ3
And I am thine ere morning decks the fellJ3
-
Firmly the raven holding him in airJ
Survey'd his prize with fiercely rabid glareJ
Now is the time to wreak on thee my lustW2
Yet thou shalt own that I am good and justW2
Then from its socket Harrald's eye he toreH
And drank a full half of the hero's goreH
Since I have mark'd thee thou art free to goK2
But loiter not when thou art there belowK2
-
Young Harrald sinks with many a sob and tearJ
Down from the sky to nature's lower sphereK3
He rested long beneath the poplar tallB3
Which grew up under the red church's wallB3
Then rising slow he feebly stagger'd onS
Till his Minona's bower he had wonS
Trembling and sad he stood beside the doorH
Pale as a spectre and besprent with goreH
-
Minona come ere Harrald's youthful heartW2
Is burst by love and complicated smartW2
Soon will his figure disappear from earthA3
Yet we shall meet in heaven's halls of mirthA3
Minona come and give me one embraceC3
That I may instantly my path retraceC3
Thus warbles he in passion's wildest noteW2
While death each moment rattles in his throatW2
-
Minona came Almighty God she criedW2
My Harrald's ghost has wander'd o'er the tideW2
Red clots of blood his yellow tresses streakK2
Drops of the same are running down his cheekK2
Minona love survey me yet more nearK3
It is no shadow which accosts thee hereL3
Place thy warm hand upon my heart and feelL
Whether it beats for thee with slacken'd zealL
-
At once the current of her tears she stopp'dW2
His arm upheld her or the maid had dropp'dW2
The roses faded from her face awayW2
And on her head the raven locks grew grayW2
All he had borne and what he yet must bearJ
He murmurs to her whilst she trembles thereJ
The hero then with dying ardour press'dW2
For the last time his bosom to her breastW2
-
Farewell Minona all my fears are flownS
And if I grieve it is for thee aloneS
Give me a kiss and give me too a smileM3
And let not tears that parting look defileM3
Now will I drink the bitter draught of deathN3
And yield courageously my forfeit breathN3
Farewell may heaven take thee in its careJ
He said and mounted swiftly in the airJ
-
She gaz'd but he had vanish'd from her viewE3
She stood forsaken in the damp and dewE3
Then dark emotion quiver'd in her eyeK2
And thus she pray'd with hands uplifted highK2
Thou who wert vainly tempted in the wildW2
Thou who wert always charitably mildW2
Thou who mad'st Peter walk on billows blueE3
Enable me my Harrald to pursueE3
-
Sunken already was the morning starS2
The song of nightingales was heard afarS2
The red sun peep'd above the mountain's browB2
And flowers scented all the vale belowM3
There came a youthful maiden gaily drestW2
Bearing upon her back a feather vestW2
Fondly she kiss'd Minona's features wanS
Gave her the robe and then at once was goneS
-
And straight Minona clothes in it her limbsC3
And soaring upward through the ether swimsC3
To moan and sob her madden'd breast disdainsC3
Too big for such low comfort are its painsC3
The fowls that meet her in yon airy fieldsC3
She clips in pieces with an axe she wieldsC3
Each clanging pinion ceaselessly she pliesC3
But cannot meet the raven or his prizeC3
-
She hears a faint shriek in the air belowM3
And swift as eagle pounces on his foeM3
Down down she dropp'd and lighted on the shoreH
Which far and wide was wet with Harrald's goreH
She smil'd so ruefully but still was muteW2
His good right hand was lying at her footW2
That pledge of truth in love's unclouded dayW2
Was the sole remnant of the demon's preyW2
-
Deep in her breast she hid the bloody handW2
And bade adieu for ever to the landW2
Again she scower'd through the airy pathT2
Her eyeballs terrible with madden'd wrathT2
The raven sorcerer at length she spiedW2
And soon her steel was with his hot blood dyedW2
The huge black body piecemeal found a graveI
Amid the bosom of the briny waveI
-
The ocean billows fret and foam no moreH
But softly rush towards the pebbled shoreH
On which the lindens stand in many a groupO3
With leafy boughs that o'er the waters droopO3
There floats one single cloudlet in the blueE3
Close where the pale moon shows her face anewE3
It is Minona dying there that fliesC3
She sinks not no she mounts unto the skiesC3
