Ode To A Mountain-torrent (from The German Of Stolberg) Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEG HDHD IJIJ KLKL MNMN OPOP IJIJ

How lovely art thou in thy tresses of foamA
And yet the warm blood in my bosom grows chillB
When yelling thou rollest thee down from thy homeA
'Mid the boom of the echoing forest and hillB
-
The pine trees are shaken they yield to thy shocksC
And spread their vast ruin wide over the groundD
The rocks fly before thee thou seizest the rocksC
And whirl'st them like pebbles contemptuously roundD
-
The sun beams have cloth'd thee in glorious dyesE
They streak with the tints of the heavenly bowF
Those hovering columns of vapour that riseE
Forth from the bubbling cauldron belowG
-
But why art thou seeking the ocean's dark brineH
If grandeur makes happiness sure it is foundD
When forth from the depths of the rock girdled mineH
Thou boundest and all gives response to thy soundD
-
Beware thee O torrent of yonder dark seaI
For there thou must crouch beneath tyranny's rodJ
Here thou art lonely and lovely and freeI
Loud as a thunder peal strong as a godJ
-
True it is pleasant at eve or at noonK
To gaze on the sea and its far winding baysL
When ting'd with the light of the wandering moonK
Or red with the gold of the midsummer raysL
-
But torrent what is it what is it beholdM
That lustre as nought but a bait and a snareN
What is the summer sun's purple and goldM
To him who breathes not in pure freedom the airN
-
Abandon abandon thy headlong careerO
But downward thou rushest my words are in vainP
Bethink thee that oft changing winds domineerO
On the billowy breast of the time serving mainP
-
Then haste not O torrent to yonder dark seaI
For there thou must crouch beneath tyranny's rodJ
Here thou art lonely and lovely and freeI
Loud as a thunder peal strong as a godJ
