Not less light shall the gold and the green lieA
On the cyclonic curl and diamonded eye thanB
Love lay yesterday on the breast like a beastC
Not less light shall God tread my maze of nerveD
Than that great dread of tomorrow drove overE
My maze of days Not less terrible that treadF
Stomping upon your grave than I shall tread thereG
Who is a god to haunt the tomb but LoveH
-
Therefore I shall be there at morning and midnightI
Not with a straw in my hair and a tear as OpheliaJ
Floating along my sorrow but I shall come withK
The cabala of things the cipher of nature so thatL
With the mere flounce of a bird's feather crestM
I shall speak to you where you sit in all treesN
Where you conspire with all things that are deadF
Who is so far that Love cannot speak to himO
-
So that no corner can hide you no autumn of leavesP
So deeply close over you that I shall not find youQ
To stretch down my hand and sting you with lifeR
Like poison that resurrects O rememberE
How once the Lyrae dazzled and how the NovembersP
Smoked so that blood burned flashed its micaJ
And that was life Now if I dip my hand in your graveS
Shall I find it bloody with autumn and bright with starsP
Who is to answer if you will not answer meT
-
But you are the not yet dead so cannot answerE
Hung by a hair's breadth to the breath of a lungU
Nothing you know of the hole over which you hangV
But that it's dark and deep as tomorrow midnightI
I ask but you cannot answer except with wordsP
Which show me the mere interior of your fearW
The reverse face of the world But thisP
This is not death the standing on the headF
So that a sky is seen O whoQ
Who but the not yet born can tell me of my bourneX
-
Lie you there lie you there my never neverE
Never to be delivered daughter so wise in waysP
Where you perch like a bird beyond the horizonY
Seeing but not being seen above our beingZ
Then tell me shall the meeting ever beT
When the corpse dives back through the wombA2
To clasp his child before it ever wasP
Who but the dead can kiss the not yet bornX
-
Sad is space between a start and a finishB2
Like the rough roads of stars fiery and madC2
I go between birth and the urn a bright ashD2
Soon blazed to blank like a fire ball ButE2
Nothing I bring from the before no messageF2
No clue no key no answer I hear no echoG2
Only the sheep's blood dripping from the gunY
The serpent's tear like fire along the branchH2
O who will speak from a womb or a cloudI2
