HE EXPLAINSA
-
Oh just burning up some old papersB
They do make a good deal of smokeC
That's right Dolly open the windowD
They'll blaze if you give them a pokeC
I've got a lot more in the closetE
Just look at the dust What a messF
Why read it of course if you want toG
It's only a letter I guessF

-
SHE READSH
-
Just me and my pipe and the fire lightI
Whose mystical circles of redJ
Protect me alone with the shadowsK
The smoke wreaths engarland my headJ
And the strains of a waltz half forgottenL
The favorite waltz of the yearM
Played softly by fairy musiciansN
Chime sweetly and low on my earO
-
The smoke cloud floats thickly around meP
All perfumed and white till it seemsQ
A bride veil magicians have wovenL
To honor the bride of my dreamsQ
Float on dreamy waltz through my fanciesR
My thoughts in your harmony twineS
Draw near phantom face in your beautyP
Look deep phantom eyes into mineS
-
Sweet lips crimson buds half unfoldedT
Give breath to the exquisite voiceU
That waking the strands of my beingV
To melody bids me rejoiceU
Dream soul till the world's dream is endedT
Dream heart of your beautiful pastW
For dreaming is better than weepingV
And all things but dreams at the lastW
-
Change rules in the world of the wakingV
Its laughter aye ends in a sighX
Dreams only are changeless immortalY
A love dream alone cannot dieX
Toil fools Sow your hopes in the furrowsU
Rich harvest of failure you'll reapZ
Life's riddle is read the most trulyP
By men who but talk in their sleepZ

-
HE REMONSTRATESU
-
There stop That'll do yes I own itA2
But dear I was young then you knowD
I wrote that before we were marriedB2
Let's see why it's ten years agoD
You remember that night at Drake's partyP
When you flirted with Dick all the timeC2
I left in a state quite patheticD2
And went home to scribble that rhymeC2
-
What a boy I was then with my dreamingV
And reading the riddle of lifeE2
You gave a good guess at its meaningV
The night you said Yes little wifeE2
One kiss for old times' sake my DollyP
That didn't seem much like a dreamF2
Holloa something's wrong with the childrenL
Those young ones do nothing but screamF2
