An Afterthought Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABBB CDCDDD EFEFFF GHGHHH IJIKJJ GLGLLL

Vine leaves rustled moonbeams shoneA
Summer breezes softly sighedB
You and I were all aloneA
In a kingdom fair and wideB
You a Queen in all your prideB
I a vassal by your sideB
-
Fairy voices in the leavesC
Ceaselessly were whisperingD
'Tis the time to garner sheavesC
Let your heart its longing singD
Place upon her hand a ringD
Then our Queen shall know her KingD
-
E'en the moonbeams seemed to learnE
Speech when they had kissed your faceF
Passing fair my lips did yearnE
To be moonbeams for a spaceF
Lo 'tis fitting time and placeF
Speak and courage will find graceF
-
But the night wind murmured lowG
Softly brushing back your hairH
Look into her face and knowG
That she is a jewel rareH
Worthy of a monarch's heirH
Who are you that you should dareH
-
Hope died like a frost touched flowerI
But through all the coming yearsJ
In that quiet evening hourI
When the flowers are all in tearsK
When the heart hath hopes and fearsJ
When the day world disappearsJ
-
If the vine leaves rustle lowG
If the moon shine on the seaL
If the night wind softly blowG
Dreaming of what may not beL
Well I know that I shall seeL
Your sweet eyes look down on meL
